Generally there are 12 tones used in western music. In the earlier and mid 20th Century Schoenberg proposed all tones should be stated before any one is repeated. This line of tones can be divided in 2 6's, 3 4's, 4 3's, etc. As a line of tones in a "series" it has been referred to as "Serial Music." While over-popular within musical Academia for 40 or more years, there have been almost no true masters of the form who could communicate in ways that utilize the musical language in most hearers heads.
Webern, whose Violin Concerto I commended, is called the "Romantic' Serial composer. He seems more musically successful than most using this model.

I remember way back when Bob Dylan became a Christian, a Lutheran lady I worked with at the time said, "Oh, that's nice! Now I wish someone would save his voice!"
I confess, reFORMer, that I listen to everything from Bach to System of a Down, but there is music that I loathe - rap, a lot of pop, C&W, well most of it, but there are always exceptions.
Is anyone else here a fan of the Christian band Seawind? Some of their songs inspire me, and others bring me to tears...but that's how it goes with a great message and great musicianship.
The beauty of music is that one persons loathing can be anothers treasure.
