it's translated into hell, and yet it means:

the name of the subterranean region, doleful and dark, regarded by the ancient Greeks as the abode of the wicked dead, where they suffer punishment for their evil deeds; it answers to Gehenna of the Jews
to thrust down to Tartarus, to hold captive in Tartarus

I believe it is metaphor and flowery language.. (and I'm very much a literalist :gsmile: ) using Greek sentiment to express the rebel angels when they left the will of God, are now locked into darkness / deepest darkness! Reserved for the 'day' of Judgment. "Having sinned", they are now locked into that deep dark state, as having become imperfect, they cannot reverse their course and become perfect. [Not until Yhvh does it! When "all in heaven and earth gathered into Jesus".. "behold, I make all things new.."/all things made new..]

Oh! Somewhere I was in a discussion whether or not the opposer and demons were created disobedient/rebellious - I forgot about this verse "having sinned".

For if God did not spare the angels having sinned, but having cast them down to Tartarus, in chains of gloomy darkness, delivered them, being kept for judgment;

But of course only because God allowed it to happen.. doing all all things (I believe) just as He has, in order to bring about the best of all possible possibilities.. Engineering things just so.. (so all would learn good from evil all together at once?)

For  me its meaning is literally as well as metaphorically  speaking as to  very far away in outer darkness  of knowing God , no where near HIS PRESENCE   
   

In all honesty   I  not even sure about   how God will  do the final  END   ..
But God is perfect  in every way and cannot fail   in any way ...

5020 tartaróō – properly, send to Tartarus ("Tartaros"). The NT uses 5020 (tartaróō) for the netherworld – the place of punishment fit only for demons. Later, Tartaros came to represent eternal punishment for wicked people.

"5020 (tartaróō) is a Greek name for the under-world, especially the abode of the damned – hence to cast into hell" (A-S); to send into the subterranean abyss reserved for demons and the dead.

[In Greek mythology, Tartarus was a "place of punishment under the earth, to which, for example, the Titans were sent" (Souter).]

In answer to the OP's question...No, Tartarus does not mean Hell is real.  Do not put too much weight on a word from Greek mythology...used only once.  Keep in mind that it was/is for certain angels or spiritual beings, not humans.

The word Tartarus is found only once in the entire bible as Laz points out.  It is found in second Peter chapter two and verse four.  It has been incorrectly translated by the word hell in the King James Version and other versions.

It has nothing to do with hell., just as the Greek words Hades and, Gehenna have nothing to do with the orthodox Christian teaching about hell.

2 Pet 2:4  (CLV)  For if God spares not sinning messengers, but thrusting them into the gloomy caverns of Tartarus, gives them up to be kept for chastening judging;"

It is unfortunate that this word, Tartarus, is translated "hell" in many versions.

The gloomy caverns of Tartarus (KJV - chains of darkness) are not the same as Hades (the unseen), as Gehenna, or the Lake of Fire . Tartarus refers to  the temporary dungeons of sinning spirits. Jude says:

Jude 1:6  (Diaglott)  messengers and those not having kept their principality, but having left the own habitation, for a judgment of a great day, with chains perpetual under thick darkness have been kept;

Notice that these passages speak of messengers, or angels, and not men; and that they do not refer to a final state, but to a place where they are kept in imperceptible (invisible) bonds under gloom for the judgment of the great day.  There is not the faintest indication of any torment in Tartarus, but simply a temporary dungeon where sinning messengers are kept for chastening judgment.

In Matthew 8 there is the account of the evil spirits (demons) who possessed two men from the country of the Gergesenes which Jesus exorcised.

Mat 8:29 (KJV) And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

These sinning spirits know there is coming a time when they will be judged and their judgement will be a time of torment.  Not torture but torment.

There is not the faintest suggestion in text or context of the Scriptures that Tartarus carries the horrible conception which hell brings to the minds of people in general, and there is, not the slightest justification for so translating it as "hell". It is simply forcing ideas into God's word which He never intended to be there.

Although these verses are talking about angels/messengers, and not people, I think "Tartarus" is a condition and not a place.

Tartaros translated as "having cast them down to tartarus"

"..not spared but in chains of gloomy darkness having cast them down to tartarus, handed them over to judgment being kept"

Locked into darkness? Thus locked into judgment..? A flowery way of saying it?

  Yes the demonic are the  darkness  that keeps mankind  bound up in disobedience ,to me  :2c:, messengers of death /evil thoughts  tempting  and than accusing  anyone given over to their  torment . [depths of satan ] even in Rev 2 and 3  in the churches  :sigh:
