Psalm 2:9 Speaking of Jesus -

8 "Ask of me, and I shall give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession."

9 "You shall break them with a rod of iron" (truth which cannot be broken, thus iron); "You shall break them in pieces like a potter's vessel." (Clay pot)

10 "Be wise now, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth."

I happened across a bible commentary on Psalm 2 which said sinners would be broken like clay pots.. a potter would not reuse parts of a broken pot, therefore there is no hope for sinners who die as sinners (still)..

I couldn't help but beg to differ! (alas only in my head.. no comments) - Of course, I'm referring to verses eight and nine! It's nations which will not recover..

Most of the Bible is about national things not personal things...but nations to not put money in the offering plate...sooo, the preachers make it as personal as they can.

We really are all broken, at least I think so.  I have shared before my vision of seeing with my mind's eye a vast plain strewn with potsherds, each one representing a person.  I even saw the the one that was "me."
Socrates taught Plato.  Plato taught Aristotle.  Aristotle tutored the son of Philip of Macedon.  This boy grew up to become Alexander the Great, largely by slaughtering a lot of people.  That's philosophy.

Jesus spoke the Truth.  He blessed the poor.  He healed the sick.  He even raised the dead.  He died on a cross for us, lived again, and came back long enough to tell us to love one another.  That's religion.

I think the verses work on an individual sense too, if it were to have that layer of meaning. Our flesh is the clay that makes the vessels, and all flesh will be broken before Him.

I said in my post above:  "I have shared before my vision of seeing with my mind's eye a vast plain strewn with potsherds, each one representing a person.  I even saw the the one that was "me.""

Today, I realized a deeper meaning - if in this life we are like fragments or potsherds, in the resurrection we will be so much more:  the whole pot!

A song a friend of some of my friends wrote. She died before I ever met her, but I have heard wonderful things about her.

She wrote this, out of her own experiences. She came to a great faith later in her life.

Her name was Palma Pascale, and the song is called The Broken Cup.

7"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8"For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened....

Potters are referred to in Isaiah and by Paul in Romans;
A pot can be totally crushed, then remoistened and reshaped.
The pot does not tell the potter what to do. Can be made for glory or for cleaning.
Either way still used, just for a different purpose.

Nations means a lot of people- pretty big project requiring heaps of modification. Not a five minute job.

Also interesting that pots need to be fired to then be able to hold liquid as well as retain their colour. No wonder there needs to be a lake of fire.
