My DIL argues: (more or less) "One defense of UR is saying that the original meaning of the word for judgment was tree pruning, and therefore deducing that it must not be eternal judgment because the trees are not pruned to harm the tree but to help the tree.

It is a fair statement that it is pruned to help and not hurt, but it disregards the fact that the one being pruned is the one in question...I.E. the dead branch that is being cut off is not being helped....the TREE is being helped by its removal. And we are never referred to as trees, but as the branches being grafted on or being cut off."

She does make a point. How do we respond?

this part of Ezekiel's prophecy is quite clear.

In chap. XV, God foreshows the complete rejection of Jerusalem, under the figure of the branches of a vine, which, when broken off, are fit only for the fire (cf. John 15:6). There is no hint of mercy or of recovery in this chapter.

Verse 6 "Therefore thus says the Lord God: 'Like the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel..
