Crazy Things Pastors Say...(Or "UR Bloopers")

This thread is inspired by the crazy things traditional pastors/teachers say they aren't supposed to mean!  Post here things you have heard your pastor say that are evidence that their heart believes in the victorious gospel but their heads have not yet been informed of the change.  In other words they speak the UR language but deny they believe it  :laughing7:  The point is to show how the truth is emerging from within the evangelical church and surfacing without them realizing it.  Praise God!

Some "UR Bloopers" heard in traditional churches:


Heard this morning at our church:

"Our [traditional] views can get in the way of the mission.  Be open to God's message even if it's something you've never considered before.  The Jews had to let crumble one of the greatest 'sacred cows' they thought was in Scripture: the exclusivity of the Jews as God's chosen people." 



From a sermon by Tim Keller:

"Everything sad is going to come untrue". (quoting from LOTR)



From a sermon on "JUSTICE":

"We speak of getting justice but the Bible actually speaks of doing justice.  Doing justice.  That's very different.  Getting justice is sort of like getting even.  But doing justice is what the Bible actually speaks about. 

Now it's interesting looking up this definition of justice.  It means "to be put or made right".  That's actually what justice means.  But it also has a deeper meaning:  to be just is to be righteous.  Interesting.  To make someone righteous is actually what justice means.  Isn't it crazy? This kind of blows my mind: the word justice and righteousness is the SAME WORD.  How can that be?  I mean, is that how we interpret it when we read the word righteous or righteousness?  But it's the SAME WORD.  Interestingly too, that word is both a masculine and a feminine noun and a verb.  The word justice in the Scripture, God's idea of justice, is this all-encompassing idea of righteousness. 

The word righteousness carries with it this idea:  Of "right-useness".  To do justice, this right-useness would be to restore things back to how they were meant to be.  So, if we're looking to be a people in our region that do justice, because God's about doing justice, then what's that say about our perspective on justice?  It would be about putting things back to the way they were meant to be, to their righteousness, to their "right-useness"."

Here's one by Pastor Mark Driscoll in an interview regarding his new book on gender roles/marriage:


"Driscoll: Do you believe in a conscious literal eternal torment of hell?

Brierley: What has that got to do with the issue of women in leadership, if you don't mind me asking?

Driscoll: It does. It depends on your view of God. Is God like a mom who just embraces everyone? Or is he like a father who also protects, and defends, and disciplines? If you won't answer the question, I think I know the answer."



(Question:  what does ECT have to do with a father who "protects, defends and disciplines?"  When did UR imply a God who doesn't protect, defend or discipline?  and since when, btw, was it not the instinct of a mother to protect, defend and discipline?)
