"Hell is separation from God" is a common church doctrine, and explanation of Hell, and indeed the root of every Damnationalists theology. However, I contend that if the unsaved are doomed to be cast into Hell which is separation from God - then they are in Hell already, ...and cannot be cast into where they already dwell.
The unsaved do not have a connection to God under mainstream teaching, and so are separated by default - and therefore dwell in Hell.
It is here then that we get into the interesting view of that; from the defining of Hell as separation from God, we find that Salvation is the re-establishment of communion with Him. Applicably speaking, upon salvation the sinner is pulled out of Hell and into Heaven, the Kingdom of God is righteousness in the Holy Ghost, and communion with God first and foremost, before it is a place. And so we find that mankind is pulled out of Hell by the hand of God, who breathes into his dead nostrils the breath of Life, and makes him a living being - truly living having God within him. And so Death is defeated, and the man Lives.
Let us dive further then, and like good Christians ponder truths.
If Hell is separation from God, and indeed any form of Hell whether literal torture for eternity, or otherwise would be separation from God first and foremost and always; Then we can safely conclude that the unsaved, whom is for all intents and purposes dead already (see "let the dead bury their dead", and other verses) then they who are already separated from God, are already dwelling in Hell, and so cannot be cast into where they already inhabit.
The walking dead are dead, there is no Death to go to, or Hell to go to either that they do not already live in (for to be without God is a Hell worse than fire) and any thing would be but a perpetuation of their already current state of being.
But now we get to the deepest region of this examination; Salvation's power.
Jesus has defeated Death, and he is Life. And so when a man is saved he is rescued from Hell, the separation from God, and put in communion with him. The key words of this being that Jesus is not limited by Hell in his ability to save, and not by any form of it either. Neither is he limited by Death - because Death was defeated in his resurrection - for all intents and purposes there is nothing in the span of all of time, or eternity that can legitimately stand between Christ and Man.
Hell of any kind, whether temporal, or ceaseless, everlasting, or otherwise...cannot stand before Christ and the unsaved man, and the unsaved man is not so rebellious that he can stand before the infinite benevolence of God, and not respond.
Man is made in God's image, and so resonance is inevitable. Love responds to love, and true love does not fail. In the end, what ever you may believe of Hell, know this as truth - It will not stand before God and his beloved creations, he is the Heavenly Father of everyone, and every spirit will indeed return back to God who gave it.
