What is spirit to you?
Just what do you understand spirit to be?
Is spirit something you pickup or take with you?
Our friend has been found in good spirits when he hangs around the cider barrel is that correct?

How do you understand spirit? Do you think of ghosts?
What do you think of Halloween?
Do you believe in life after you die?

I think spirit is supernatural unexplainable substance, from an alien world. i.e heaven.

I think the wind, water, light and fire are the best similar natural elements.

To Me , the Spirit is, the movement of energy that regulates how an atom is held together , that is the bottom line , but so much more...

or, the moving of the empty space with in an atom that is enervated by the movement of said Matter. Air has atoms to be air, water has atoms to be water, the breath of God has movement because He exhales, and causes Life to BE

Sound does not have any particles but is caused by the movement of soundwaves through other substances.  Light has particles.  Hearing seems to be associated with Spirit.  Sight, well, Eve didn't smell the apple and was enticed, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't Bathsheba's laugh that attracted David.

Red, light is a binity, particle and waves. Odd stuff... :laughing7:

If I look at a human body a spirit is a thing without a will that can't exist on it's own. It's personality.
So basicly spirit is nothing more than a tool. A 'thing' But at the same time that thing is very essential because without a spirit there wouldn't be personality. Everyone would act the same. Or act not at all because personality is determins most of what we do or don't do.
So the spirit is a thing we can live without but at the same time we won't be we without that spirit. In that sense the person and the spirit are one.
I can't really explain what I feel

For God it's no different. It's just a more advanced form of the above.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

In order to answer that question we must first understand what "spirit" means.

Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words defines the Hebrew word "spirit" as:
spirit : 1. breath of life. 2. mind set, of one's mind or thinking.

The Bible refers to the Holy Spirit as God's Spirit or the Spirit of God. It is the Spirit (the mind) of the Holy One. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, in actuality it is the mind (Spirit) of God coming upon us. This is why it can foresee the future and give instructions. 1 Corinthians 2:11 states:

"For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit (mind) within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God," (the mind of God).

The mind of God is the essence of God. It is God. Through God's mind comes His thoughts which are expressed as His word which is His will. The power of God comes from God's will, the reason is because whatever God wills happens. Let us look at creation for an example of this. In Genesis 1:2-3 it says:

"And the Spirit of God moving gently on the face of the waters. Then God said. 'Let there be light,' and there was light."

God's mind (Spirit) swept over the waters. God's mind produced the thoughts of creation which God expressed as a word by saying, "Let there be light." At God's word (His will) His power went into action and the heavens and earth were created.

2 Peter 3:5: "that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water."

Revelation 4:11: "for you created all things, by your will they came into being."

As you can see, word and will are interchangeable. God's word represents his thoughts, which are His will. Sirach 37:16 (a book only in the Catholic Bible) provides us with an excellent example of this thought:

"A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act."

Your thoughts are the source of your actions, a word (your will) is your thoughts expressed.

This is the reason why the Bible states that the Spirit of God or the Holy Spirit came to an individual instead of just saying God. In a sense it is almost identical. God's thoughts are God, but it is not God physically. It is His mind. Let me use an analogy in order to explain this a little easier.

Let us imagine that I have the power of telepathy (of communicating my thoughts). I am in Miami and my friend is in New York. I could send my friend a thought for him to turn on the TV and watch the news. He could in effect say that the mind of Juan came to him and told him to turn on the TV, which in effect is me. But it would not be correct for him to say that Juan was here and told me to turn on the TV because I physically was not there. This is the reason for the difference in language. The Holy Spirit is also considered to be the power of God. As through God's will comes his power.

Luke 1:35: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most high will overshadow you."

This verse is sometimes used to imply that the Holy Spirit is just the power of God. But if we read this verse carefully we will see that the Holy Spirit wields the power, it is not itself the raw power. The Holy Spirit possesses the power. The power comes from the mind of the most high, God. Spirit of God = Mind of God. Let us look at some other verses to confirm this idea.

Romans 15:19: "By the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum I have finished preaching the gospel of Christ."

Romans 15:13: "So that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."

Acts 10:38: "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power.

1 Corinthians 2:4-5: "And my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

1 Thesalonians 1:5: "For our gospel did not come to you in word alone, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction."

These verses are very clear that the power comes from the Spirit (mind) of God.

When the Bible speaks of "The indwelling of the Holy Spirit," it is God's Holy Spirit (mind) renewing your mind. This is why our way of thinking changes when we receive the Holy Spirit. Through God's mind comes His power.

When reading in Exodus, I came upon the phrase "the finger of God." I was aware that the same phrase was used in the book of Luke regarding the method Jesus uses to cast out demons. I decided to do a phrase study using e-Sword.

Exo 8:19 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, "This is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
Exo 31:18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.

Luk 11:14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons," 16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven... Luk 11:20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

I had also come upon Scriptures that says Jesus cast out demons by the Spirit of God. This would strongly lead to the conclusion that the finger of God is the Spirit of God the Father.

Mat 12:22 Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw. 23 And all the people were amazed, and said, "Can this be the Son of David?" 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons."  Mat 12:28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

When you connect Luke 11:20 with Matthew 12:28 then you get the understanding of what the finger of God is.
Luk 11:20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
Mat 12:28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Now the same is true with the Holy Spirit. We also have in the Bible two parallel teachings of the same subject one Matthew and one in Luke.

Luk 12:11 And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself or what you should say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say."

Mat 10:19 When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

Likewise, when you connect to Matthew 10:20 with Luke 12:12 you get an understanding of what the Holy Spirit is. It is the Spirit of the Father.

The Holy Spirit is the mind of the Holy One, God. It is how He communicates with us. It is His presence that brings with it His power. It is not a separate being from God, yet God, anymore than our minds are separate from us. It is the way in which God guides us and teaches us, through His mind. The mind (Spirit) of God is the greatest teacher of all. It taught our Lord Jesus the Christ. Through God's mind His plan for our salvation is revealed to us in His message of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus the Christ. God bless you, and see you at the resurrection!

It is clear that for Paul, the spirit of the LORD is the mind of the LORD. These definitions are crucial in order to understand many verses of the Bible. If you are one in spirit with Jesus it means that you are one in mind with Jesus. That you have the same mind-set, the same disposition, that you think the same as he does. This after all is what a Christian strives for, to try to reach the example of faith that Jesus showed us. To be able to discern the will of God as Jesus did so perfectly. We are told to have the same mind, the same attitude as Christ.

Examples:
1 Corinthians 2:16: "But we have the mind of Christ."

Philippians 2:2: "Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing."

1 Peter 4:1: "Therefore, since Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourself with the same attitude, for whoever suffers in the flesh has broken with sin, so as not to spend what remains of one's life on human desires, but on the will of God."

Philippians 2:5: "Have among yourselves the same attitude  that is also yours in Christ Jesus."

With these definitions we can better understand a verse like

1 Corinthians 7:17: "But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit."

In other words, whoever unites himself with the Lord is one with him in mind, mind-set, attitude, thinking, or in purpose, which are all synonymous. Here are some other examples. Try substituting one of the given definitions where it says "spirit" and you will get a clearer meaning of the verse.

Numbers 5:14: "Or if a man is overcome by a spirit of jealousy."

Galatians 6:1: "Even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one with the spirit of gentleness."

1 Corinthians 2:12: "We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God."

Deuteronomy 34:9: "Now Joshua, son of Nun, was filled with the spirit of wisdom."

Genesis 41:8: "Next morning his spirit was agitated."

"No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again" ...no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and spirit"

Jesus is telling Nicodemus that unless you make a commitment to God (which is demonstrated by baptism) and be born again of the mind, you will not enter the kingdom of God. Our minds have to be born again, they have to think differently than they did when they followed the flesh. Our minds have to be renewed in order to be able to discern and follow the will of God.

Romans 12:2: "Do not conform yourself to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God."

Ephesians 4:23: "And be renewed in the spirit(purpose) of your minds."

2 Corinthians 4:16: "Although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self (spirit i.e. mind) is being renewed day by day."

Colossians 3:9-10: "Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self (new mind),which is being renewed, for knowledge in the image of its creator."

Romans 7:6: "Dead to what held us captive, so that we may serve in the newness of the spirit (mind) and not under the obsolete law.

You will notice that in many of the verses that we are reading, the adjectives that are attributed to renewal are adjectives that are associated with our minds, such as knowledge, discern, etc.

The new covenant that Jesus ushered in is of the mind and not the letter.

Hi Michah,

I assume you are speaking of the spirit in man?

I think the spirit is also whats in our mind, our personality. I think God has to inspire and regenerate our minds to be in tune with him. I think of it as kind of like lightening touching a rod. Our minds are the rod. My spirit is like a tape, on it is stored my life. When I die it will return to God and when I am resurrected God will put that tape back into the recorder {me}.

Somewhere I read a verse that talks about the silver cord being loosed, or cut.  I think this is speaking about the spirit.

I think the first Adam had a flleshly spirit which we were all born with, We were dead, spiritually.  Christ the second Adam, is a quickening spirit which when he jump starts our fleshly spirit we become alive., {spiritually speaking}.

The silver cord is like an umbilical cord that attaches our spirit to our body.  I've seen it.  When you leave the body, the cord stays attached.  I assume that if it were ever cut, one would 'die.'

Our spirit is everything we know ourselves to be--what identifies us as us.  From what I've seen, it is also a body with a one to one relationship to the physical body.

6Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

CHB, I believe you are trully attempting to reason the thought rather than taking the status quo. But I do not agree, yet I am speaking of the spirit of man. The way I understand Gen. 2:7 is that the breath of life is the "cause" of the beginning of the breathing for man kind. I do not understand or see how there is any difference of mankinds breath of life than any other "breathing creature" which is a living soul. Mankind/man/adam is most certainly above the rest of the breathing creatures, only for the reason that this was The Creator found this to be His purpose.

I don't believe there is any difference between the breath in man and the breath in animals.  There is a living and active, animating principle/force? in every living thing.  If you cut a dead body it will not heal.  It is what causes your cells to remain in motion, thus alive.  Once it is removed the entire body shuts off, the power is gone.  I believe that the fountainhead in the human body (and other vertebrates) for this is the nervous system.  The brain is the master control center sending and receiving information along the spinal cord.  The nervous system controls every cell tissue muscle and organ.  Once the nerve supply is cut the area dies (look at a paralytics legs, or Christopher Reeves on the ventilators).  The spinal cord may be the natural body for the silver cord.

I know the soul is in the blood, I think the spirit is in the nervous system.  I don't think it was a onetime deal either,

Heb 1:3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,     word=rhema=spoken word(the word that has been breathed) as opposed to logos the principle
power=dunamis=dyno-might (said in my best JJ voice)

Molly

Quote from: rhmI know the soul is in the blood, I think the spirit is in the nervous system.

yeah.  The brain is transmitting electrical signals to the body via the spirit.

Have you heard of 'ghost limbs' where even though a limb is amputated, the person still feels it?

The NDE's tell us you can still perform all the functions of the brain when the brain is dead.  You just can't control the physical body any longer.

Hi Micah,

I don't disagree with what you say here.  When God breathed into Adam he became a living soul. He was a dead soul before God breathed into him. I believe the breath is the spirit also. I do believe my spirit is like a tape when I die my spirit lies dormat until it is restored back into my body after I am resurrected. Therefore, my body is dead and my spirit is unresponsive.

Jesus commended his spirit back to God when he died. Yet he appeared to Mary and said "I have not ascended to my Father yet. I don't think Jesus spirit was something that existed apart from His body, as far as being active, knowing, alive so to speak. Did God restore Jesus spirit back into him before he returned to the Father?  Or, maybe Jesus didn't need the spirit that he had before he was crucified?  Did Jesus have the same kind of spirit that we have? Just thinking out loud here.

Jesus is a special case obviously, the first man resurrected into a glorified body.  It is that body he presents to the Father as the perfect, unblemished, firstborn Lamb of God.  He is also about to enter the holy of holies as our high priest to present the Lamb.  Therefore, he cannot allow himself to be touched by anything unclean before this happens.

Im somewhat slow, just what does "He was a dead soul before" mean?  First I do not know what a dead soul is. The first time the word soul is used in the Bible is Gen.2:7 "man became a living soul," other than that, I have no idea what a "soul" is. Do you? Breath and spirit have the same deffinition.

Ecc 3:20 All are going to one place; All have come from the soil, and all return to the soil."

Ecc 12:7  And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.
Now I believe that the spirit that is spoken of here is "breath" the natural breathing we do as human beings.

"Therefore, my body is dead and my spirit is unresponsive." (CHB) Yes your body(dust, soil) is dead so there can be no response.
Your spirit(breath) went back to the one who gave it. Lu.23:45 ..." Father, to Thy hands I commit my spirit..."
This is spirit  G4151  pneuma   a current of air, that is, breath (blast) or a breeze; by analogy or figuratively a spirit,
Jesus was in a human body and He breathed(spirit, breath as you and I) I will note this, Gen.1:2 "...the Spirit of God moved upon "
I do not reason that it was "The Spirit" of God that was breathed into the dust of the ground, but the breath(wind of breathing) for later in Gen 3:20  And the man calleth his wife's name Eve: for she hath been mother of all living.
I believe that religion and christian theology push ideas of mens ideas of what the Bible is teaching.

I do not believe that Jesus is anything other than the Risin Christ from the dead, the First born of many.
