Col 3:16 ...sing psalms, hymns, spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts

Col 3:15-17 NLT

v 15 let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.  For as members of one body you are called to live in peace.  and always be thankful.

v 16  Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives.  Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives.  Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.

v 17  And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

I started reading, praying five psalms a day on February 16, studying one proverb a day, today is Day 18 so I read, prayed Psalms 86-90; studied Proverbs 18; read and meditated John 18... so some bits and pieces of my study and prayer time:

Ps 86:9-10
ALL nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord; and shall glorify Your name.

For You are great and do wondrous things; You are God alone.

Lastpost's reply to the Phil 4:6 thread reminded me that a few months ago I started a new thread based on Col 3:16 ...  so, of course, I looked for it and found it and reread it and decided  to bring it back for others to read...  So thanks Lastpost for your reply and even though you may have questioned whether it was an appropriate reply for that thread, I believe God used it to remind me of Col. 3:16...

I live in Minnesota and there is a Christian Radio station here that has a Sunday- morning  worship hour called "Psalm 95" with recorded hymns by the National Christian Choir.  I so enjoyed the hour, I decided to purchase several CD's from the National Christian Choir and usually play the CD's as background music all day long.  I appreciate the fact that the singing and the music do not get in the way of hearing the precious words (always Scripturally based hymns)...

Dear anna274, thank you for this food for the soul, I will come back to re-read it.

There is a line in Psalm 84 that I find means nothing less than the Psalmist has complete and total love for the Lord God, literally and truly meaning in desperate love with God, which means that being apart is both spiritually, emotionally, mentally and even physically unbearable:

Psalm 84
"How beloved are thy dwelling places, O LORD of hosts. My soul longeth, yea, even fainteth for the courts of the LORD: my heart and my flesh crieth out for the living God."

The same applies in this Psalm:

Psalm 63
"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. To see thy power and thy glory, as I have seen thee in the sanctuary."

I think people who do not believe in God could read this and perhaps think it is merely poetic, but the Psalmist obviously means it literally. It is not the kind of thing a person says unless it is true.

And the Object of the Psalmist's deep love is the Lord God with whom the Word was with in the beginning, indeed the Christ:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). The Psalmist was in love with the Lord God who is the same as the Word (Christ).
