Almost everyone on here's probably heard, and even been taught some things - maybe even believed some of it; that now looking back on it you just want to say "man, that's silly"!
Here's a couple I've heard;
"Jesus talked more about hell than He did about heaven". :Yeahright:
I just heard one this week in Wally World that I was SO tempted to go up to the two people and say "did you know Jesus is the Savior of the world"? I didn't :sigh:, but here's what I overheard. Lady (carried away) witnessing to man looking like a deer caught in headlights, says "the Bible's true. And I would lose my eternity for not doing what I'm told". Man, that's silly! (Poor guy.)
Another one; as a little kid, singing in Sunday School "and if the Devil doesn't like it he can sit on a tack (ouch!), sit on a tack (ouch!), sit on a tack (ouch!)....". Cute, but again - silly!
OK, a couple more and you can chime in.
"I'm not so sure you don't have to confess Jesus as Lord a couple of times a month to stay saved" :mshock:.
And one I remembered today that I used to say myself and actually "teach" others; "we live in a fallen world. Bad things happen (shrugging shoulders/shaking head)". (The premise and background being that God's not in control/Satan rules because He tricked man against God's will [not realizing any measure of control the "Prince of the Air" may have, that God still has decreed it (Amos 3:6)]; things are messed up and God's just sort of hands off, letting things go their course - except He's trying to get a few people to do right and accept Him. Don't we feel sorry for God? Isn't He nice? He's trying to help us, if we'd just let Him.)

Wow, I know I'm not the only one that's heard or believed silly stuff. The point of my thread was to have a place to dump some of it in one place. Anyone have any?
God WANTS to save you, but you must choose him! (or else get thrown into literal flames forever.) He is SO good, that He doesn't FORCE your love, He lets you choose! How sweet!
ET'ers saying "cremation is a sin". :mshock: Ohhhhhh.... so it's ok, to burn LIVE bodies FOREVER, but the momentary burning of a dead body is a no-no?

one for me is being taught that God looks like a grandfather, sitting up above the clouds on his throne. Now no church ever says he "looks" like an old man, but that's how he's been portrayed in every denomination I can think of. And heaven being above the clouds, where Jesus is preparing literal mansions. I'll take a five bedroom with a den.

These are great. Some things I heard: "God cannot get what He wants." That was a comment made to me by someone who was appointed by my preacher to debate me on my belief in UR. That was right after he said that whatever God's plan is, He can do it.

Lady standing before the church I last attended before calling it quits was trying to inspire people to tithe.
She said in so many words that we have "Tithers Rights" so when we tithe we can demand that God work for us.
Yeah, now that's just silly.
Tithers Rights, this same lady doesn't like entitlement programs, now that's just silly.
Well, there's the whole idea that an all loving God will allow people to be eternally tormented in Hell forever. Sure, I believed it at one point, but looking back it's easy to see how stupid it was.
Plus, if you add into the above mix the idea that this all loving God is ALSO all powerful, but still won't save certain people (even though he really wants to), you get this: ULTRA silly!!
Same can be said about annihilation, but of course regular ET is infinitely worse in its cruelty.
And, I have to agree with some of those already listed: that God will just erase the memory of the damned; that God doesn't choose Hell, people do. OH! and, this has to be one of the more stupid I've heard: the reason behind Hell is that people reject God's perfect son and so the only just way to be punished for such a sin is infinite punishment.
Silly stuff in all these areas. xP Too bad people actually believe them...

really is! 35,000 people a day getting thrown into eternal damnation? The idea is unfathomable and infinitely cruel.

Since Jesus, the Scripture never speaks of anyone but Jesus having disciples. Still, in sharing at simplechurch.org with some fellow into "discipling" who lives in Israel, we went over the various incidents of Scripture where it might be assumed ceaseless torture for ever was taught. He eventually realized that upon inspection none of the passages said anything like that directly and that he couldn't repeat any other words of Scripture to that effect. His response at that point was that God ran out of room in the Bible. There were so many words in the Bible that God had to limit them so as to not go over into too many words. Eternal torture for most people was true, but there just wasn't enough space left to say everything He wanted us to believe.
I don't think I could even make this kind of stuff up if I tried.

This thread is funny! Wish I had the nerve to send it to me ET relatives. But life in this world is easier for me if I don't mention God saving everyone - they just can't believe it at this time.
My grandmother used to tell us little bitty kids as we sat in front of red-hot coals in a fireplace that THAT was what hell really is like and there are people in the fire who will never get out. It terrified me. Screwed me up for a long time!

There are so many! I've heard that one too. I think ETers spend a lot of time trying to separate God from people's destiny (if they think their destiny is hell). Beware of anything you would not tell a child.
And Jabcat, yes it is sad how much fear I had growing up. And there are still plenty of children who are subjected to the same fears (a lot in Fundamentalist and Catholic circles and probably a lot of that preached in Islam as well). I do believe that our calling is to set those captives free, as many as we can. I don't know exactly why I was so vulnerable to believe everything I was told. I had a lot of fear in my childhood for various reasons.
Anne, sensitive, tender hearts are greatly affected. But then they are the ones who care enough to do something about it later on. :HeartThrob:
Jumping subjects, oh man, I got'ta tell ya'll about my old Aunt Ida ("Aint Idey" as we called her out in the cotton country of Southeast Missouri).
She was blinded as a little child when her mom dropped lye into her eyes, I suppose while making soap. She had an interesting life, which I won't go into detail about. Anyway, she was really funny. She said some of the darnedest things. I grew up in little country Pentecostal churches, and it was a tradition to have "Testimony Services". We'd take turns standing up and talking about different things, supposedly the good things God had done and was doing in our lives.
Sometimes when Aint Idey was testifying, you weren't really sure where she was going to go with it - often she'd sort of tell stories, saying something funny in the midst of her testimonies and let out a little giggle ("that's what makes the cheeze binding" is one I remember). Anyway, this one particular cold winter night she was talking about some things in her testimony and got around to the weather. She announced to one and all "it's so cold out there, a little hell would feel pretty good tonight".
She was a sweet, interesting old lady, and that's the only time I ever remember her mentioning hell. Not bad. :thumbsup:

On another occassion, the pastor read one of my favorite verses in Romans 8 where is says there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God, and then totally contradicted it: "There is something that can separate you from the love of God - your free will can separate you from his love" Seriously, he really said that. :dontknow:

I think the same article states they even have locked the gates/doors of hell from the inside.
Even Jesus seems to like it in hell.

Our recent convos with CoG37 have given mucho material. One that comes to mind (http://www.tentmaker.org/forum/index.php?topic=6586.msg72218#msg72218) is the reasoning that 1 Timothy 4:10 should not be translated: "who is the savior of all men especially those who believe" but rather "he is the the savior of all men, that is those who believe." Basically blatantly mistranslating upon the reasoning of this statement: "we didn't feel that using the adverb "especially" suited the context of μάλιστα especially well (uh, pardon the pun...). So we used "that is" instead."
That one really floored me.
1] God only saves who believe.
2] Only those who are drawn by God can believe.
3] Believing means getting saved. So God can't draw people because He would break rule #1
So basicly God saves by making people believe but He doesn't because they don't believe :laughing7:

Unless you assume 'come to me' is about things like crucifixion then are making Jesus a liar when saying "I started to believe." Should be "I was made believing."

Another silly idea -- that we are saved from hell. The Bible clearly says we are saved from sin & death. :sigh:
And the idea that we "go to heaven" and sing in a church choir endlessly - or morph into angels. :gangel:

Heard that one most of my life in Pentecostal Churches and usually what some of the ones that I would hear would mean would be an atmosphere where God is being praised all of the time, worshipped, thanked, et. al. However, I have heard it taken to the extreme of a "our way or the highway" kinda implication that heaven is precisely like what we're like
in this particular Church and follows the same schedule.

No longer sure on this one, since having grown wings in the spirit after a really prolonged fast with intercessory prayer. The wings we mount up with in Isaiah 40, Malachi 4, Psalm 91, and other passages seem extremely literal to me now. I feel 'em flapping any time I step into spiritual activity now. Initially, only felt 'em while praying in other tongues a lot, as that's what grew them in with the prolonged fast at God's direction about another matter. So, I'm unsure about whether or not we do morph into angels, since this is my very first summer being conscious of invisible wings. :cloud9: And as 'crazy' as that sounds, Martin, I experienced the same shocking revelation when He sent me to minister in OK several years ago, as I was worshiping Him in private and felt wings unfold and go forward quickly over me to cover me, as I bowed prostrate to Him. When I heard this I interpreted it as "attending church service." I can recall being miffed because church (services, that is) are so focused around particular *forms* of worship, namely singing, that some people certainly enjoy more than others. A lot of people envision Heaven this way as well. This did cause me to take note when attending a different church that they encouraged members to paint and displayed their paintings and accompanying essays in the narthex -- very cool IMO.

I've seen that one locally as well. It is astonishing! The "Imagine Fire and Brimstone" I'd never heard or seen before (that's awful!)
This stuff has its roots in Mo-lech or Baal worship - the sacrifice of humans to a red hot brass bull was done in certain periods of very dark history.
