Reading the Bible as a new believer

Hi there,
I am not sure if any of your conversion experiences would fit the description in this post, but I'm curious if anyone's has. Many Christians have been saved after hearing Gospel presentations in which they were told that if they did not accept Jesus Christ as their Savior before dying, they would go to hell forever. But, if any of you were saved without being taught eternal torment at the time of your conversion, what happened if you subsequently read a mainstream Bible translation on your own and came across the eternal torment Scriptures? Did you then start believing in eternal torment, or did somebody have to explain that doctrine to you before you accepted it? I recall Gary Amiralt saying that after his conversion, he saw UR in the Bible until churches tried to refute him.

I was dating a girl whose father was a Baptist minister. They gave me one of the "new" translations of the New Testament "good news for modern man" and before I started reading it, I asked the Lord to reveal his truth to me through his word.
As I read, I believed and at some point after John, I got down on my knees and asked God to make me like the "good" christians of the Bible. When I came to the Hell parts, the girls father, that had a phd in biblical Hebrew, told me that he didn't believe "only" Christians would be saved in the end. He then told me I would have to work out what I believed after reading, praying, studying the word of God because "being told what to believe" is meaningless. :Peace2:
