I believe that question statement, Gen 3:9 And calling is Yahweh Elohim to the human, and He is saying to him, "Adam! Where are you?"
Is what Yahweh Elohim is asking everyone, especially those who believe, today... "Where are you?" I believe it is a question that does not express what the Lord God does not know, but it is what the human needs to ask and answer within himself when he misses the mark. Adam had moved from Gen. 2:8 to Gen. 2:23-25 to Gen. 3:6.....Adam was in a whole new place, the Lord God knew where Adam was, but did Adam? I personally ask myself that question.
I probably didn't say that properly, but it's the best I could do. I hope it is not taken as teaching. It's just the way I have come to understand the question.

On hearing Adam's reply, He asked another telling question, and I picture Him asking surprised, then slowly, grieved: "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the fruit I told you not to eat?" I can even picture God like this: :doh: Of course He knew it all before, and His reaction was to communicate with Adam.

Offering the chance to admit is a key- part of admission to the act, recognition of the problem.
I remember the disciplining of my own kids. Knew what they had done, but wanted them to be aware that I knew. So would ask them where have you been, what have you done lately? Then would point out the situation, highlight the consequences, and bring in the correction so that they would learn.
Christ and Paul talk about disciplining those He loves.
Communication is an important process; Our Father does this in so many ways, precisely, and at the appropriate time.

Perhaps, one of the reasons He asked Adam in that way, was just to be a loving father. Where are you, my son? Have you lost your way? I can't be with you as I was before. I miss you already.

Rethinking my statement. Although God loved Adam and Eve and was not happy with the turn of events in the garden, I am thinking He was in a discipling, teaching moment, rather than in a sentimental mode. So yes, Micah, I think you hit it on the nail. The Lord knew where Adam was, of course. I didn't re-read those verses, but my recollection is that Adam is hiding, realizing what had occurred and that he was naked, as well. God is making it clear, in that one statement.....why can't I find you, Adam.......something is very different now........their relationship has dramatically shifted, and in that one question, it reflects this.

"Where are you"? "Where am I" God knows where we are but do we?
It is interesting that the titles of the scrolls of the OT in Hebrew were translated incorrectly by the translators. For example the book of Genesis should really be titled "In the beginning". Also the book called Numbers should really be titled "in the wilderness". Now that fits so well with what Micah posted. Where are we? We are in this world which is wilderness. I know we are not of this world but we live in it.
