Really, who knows. Maybe He learned in the temple. Maybe they were often on the run. Maybe they were lower middle class, maybe Jesus puled whatever coins they needed out of a fishes mouth to care for the family after Joseph passed away. I am sure there is a reason Mary asked Jesus to turn the water into wine at the feast. He had probably done similar things around the house or 20 years or so. Who knows? :o)

I have realized myself that the idea about Joseph & Mary being poor is BS:

They were denied a room at the inn, not because they lacked the money, but because it was NO VACANCY.

Mary's uncle, Joseph of Arimathea, was one of the richest men of his time.  These were not bottom-rung people.

The fact that Jesus "stood up to read" in the synagogue tells us that his family as affluent enough to provide Him with an education.  What was the literacy rate in Judea in those days?  Not terribly high among the poor, I'm sure.

While it's true Joseph of Arimathea was far beyond rich from grain and tin trade, Jesus' parents were (dirt) poor. Scripture says so....

Luke 2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

Lev 12:1-8
1 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.
3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
4 And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.
5 But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying three score and six days.
6 And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to the priest:
7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that has born a male or a female.
8 And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.
