Discerning God's Will

I have heard many people say that the best way to discern God's Will in difficult situations is to go with the choice that brings you the most peace.  Could someone please provide me with some scriptures that support this?

I'm not sure I can completely agree with that.  I know God's will has led me down path's that initially brought tremendous anxiety.  It wasn't until retrospect observation that I was able to see his hand at work.  What gives me peace today is the fact that I know God never leaves me, He never forsakes me.  He knows my beginning and he surely knows my ending...if I travel off course he will redirect me.  So, I try not to focus too much on which path gives me the most peace.  More times than not, God stretches me and requires things of me that will not give me peace initially.  What I have noticed, is that when it's time for me to know, I know.  I might try to figure it out early.  But, when it's HIS time he will lead me and not a second sooner.  I am experiencing this right now.  I have some options before me.  I don't know which road to travel in my professional life.  What I do know is that when I am supposed to know I will. 

I read something today that really spoke to me.  Maybe it will speak to you as well.  I read that the church often times preaches that the mind should guard our spirit.  But, in reality, if we are walking in the spirit...the mind is in submission to the spirit.  Many things in me were birthed in my spirit long before I understood them.  Some people tried to beat them out of me...doctrine certain tried to beat them out of me.  But, these truths birthed in my spirit, eventually grew inside my mind.  I knew before I understood.  So, when at a crossroads, I try not to overanalyze it today.  I know God has me on a path and I will be led by His hand.  He will open doors and he will close doors.  My mind will only get in the way of that process.

I think if we are doing what God wishes we were to do-we can know by asking ourselves if it is our ego pulling at us. We are supposed to be asking all the time, if this is God's will for my life. In Vs 19 Paul says we are more likely to be in touch with God's will for our lives while we are worshiping him. I've found this is true for me. During prayer and time with God is when I come to that peace and I know I am making the right choice.

There isn't any, I could have the most peace by killing someone so they would shut up and I'd never have to hear their annoying voice again.

People need to realize, peace is not an emotion, peace is understanding that you have acted in righteousness and how you feel about it as a human is irrelevant.   This is something that takes much time, contemplation and study so that we act in a manner that not only glorifies God but can be demonstrated to possibly edify others.

Not sure of any scripture having to do with peace being a sign of God's will.  I don't trust that to be a sign, it hasn't always been good for me to trust my feelings.

But, for me to do God's will is to do what is right.
Col 3:23-24  And whatever you may do, work from the soul as to the Lord and not to men,  (24)  knowing that from the Lord you shall receive the reward of the inheritance. For you serve the Lord Christ.

Then if I haven't decerned correctly, if I know that I was doing it as unto the Lord then I will trust Him with this scripture in mind.

Rom 8:28  But we know that to the ones loving God all things work together for good, to those being called according to purpose;

I think that's pretty well said for me too.  I believe it's His will first (through prayer, trust, looking to Him, checking it against His Word) then we can have the peace - clear conscience, unencumbered relationship, etc.  I do think it's kind of hard to know sometimes though, as I know as I've personally missed His will many times.   Still, thankfully He is merciful and patient, leading us along.   :thumbsup:

p.s   not sure that's the sort of peace the OP is addressing, but I've experienced both peace/confirmation and conviction, based on what I was doing (or considering doing) so maybe there's at least something there.  then there's the scrips.  I personally don't believe God would have any of us do anything that's clearly against accurately translated, rightly divided, and Spirit-revealed scriptures.  He said "my sheep know my voice", but I believe the adversary also "talks", as well as sometimes I hear "my own voice" (carnal mind)...  so I don't think it's always easy - thus forgiveness, Him directing our steps, we learn through failing and redemption, etc.

Yes, and long suffering and patients.  Some just don't exibit this fruit.
