I really need to stop trying to understand scripture from my 21st century, American mindset!

So I was thinking about the 1000 year reign of Christ in relation to the Day of the Lord.

I love the Online Etymology Dictionary website, it really helps to understanding how words were created and what they meant in different cultures.

In looking at thousand, OED had this:
... and probably ultimately a compound with indefinite meaning "great multitude, several hundred," literally "swollen-hundred," with first element from PIE root *teue- (2) "to swell" (see thigh).

And year:
...Greek hora "year, season, any part of a year," also "any part of a day, hour;" ...

And day:
but rather to Sanskrit dah "to burn," Lithuanian dagas "hot season," Old Prussian dagis "summer." Meaning originally, in English, "the daylight hours;"

So this could be looked at as "a season of great multitude" (1000 years) and "summer" or "hours of light" (day).

If we draw this into the seven feasts, we can see that Pentecost, The Festival of First Fruits, is the beginning of the harvest. The harvest would continue until the Feast of Trumpets, bringing in the final harvest.

The Apostles received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the firstfruits. The harvest will continue up through the Feast of Trumpets, or all through the summer months. So there will be a swelling, or multitude during the harvest season, the season when the sun is bright in the sky.

The Day:
Joh_8:12  Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Joh 11:9  Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.
Joh 11:10  But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him.

The Harvest:
Luk 10:2  Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

From this perspective, it could be that we are currently in the Day of the Lord!

Something else that I notice is that Harvest, from Pentecost to Feast of Trumpets, or that being the Fourth, can also be looked at as 3-1/2. Does that tie into Revelations and Daniel's midst of the week?

The only dictionary that counts is the one of God. The meaning of a word isn't made by scholars but by society. When society starts using a word, it ends up in a dictionary. The defenition given by the public is the official one.

The primary and very correct meaning of hell is undoubtedly an eternal torture pit with literal fire..... according to dictionary rules. Society gave hell that meaning. But TM isn't about society, but about God.

Below an unalterted quote from what's accepted as lexicon of good quality (in Christian circles). It may take a few readings to understand the scholary format but my understanding is as follows: (I addeded the underlined bit myself as a way to clarify.

basanizo=torment
The first known meaning of basanizo dates back long before the NT was written. It meant an inspector of gold and silver coins.
In 288 AD long after the NT was finished basanizo also had the meaning of checking calculations.
Later basanizo gets it's current meaning of torture.

So we don't just need the etomology of a word but also the dates when the new meaning came into existance.
(Almost?) every Christian lexicon is a doctrinal deception. Not because the defenitions are wrong but because they are purposely placed out of the context of time. A Christian lexicon should only have the defenitions of a word when it was used in Biblical times by the inspired writers. That means that all meanings that came into existance after 100AD should be completly removed.
When a Christian looks up basanizo he/she wants to know how Jesus understood it, not how a 13th century pope defined it.
When Jesus said basanizo He meant coin inspector and not a meaning that basanizo got 3 centuries later.

It gets even more problematic with the OT. The NT was written 'recently' in a short period of time so the word meanings didn't change (much). But what about the OT. Did Moses, Daniel, Isaiah, Job and Jesus all gave exactly the same meaning to a certain Hebrew word? For starters every meaning that came into existance after teh last OT book was written should be removed from lexicons.

BTW the above is also in part how scholarts detect false books in the OT and NT. According to that method the current OT and NT contains a few books which use word meanings that didn't exist at the time the books where written.

βάσανος, βασανίζω, βασανισμός, βασανιστής

1. The βάσανος originally belongs to the calling of the inspector of coins. It is linked with the Heb. root בחן ("to test") and the Egyptian bḫn; ("basalt"). According to K. Sethe.1 bhn is the word which underlies the Heb. בחן2 and the Gk. βάσανος. βάσανος is generally accepted to be a loan word. βασανίτης is most closely related to it. Βασανίτου λίθου ὄρος is the mountain of the bḫn stone. R. Herzog thinks that he may deduce from the etymological development that the ars spectandi, the testing of gold and silver as media of exchange by the proving stone, was first developed by the Babylonians, then came to the Aramaeans and Hebrews by way of Lydia (Λυδίαλίθος [Bacchyl. Fr., 14, 1, Blass]; βάσανος, Bacchyl., 8, 58), and from them to the Gks. In non-biblical Gk. βάσανος is a commercial expression, or is used in relation to government. It then acquires the meaning of the checking of calculations, which develops naturally out of the basic sense of βάσανος, βασανίζειν (P. Oxy., 58, 25 [288 AD]). In the spiritual sphere it has the figur., sense, which is closely related to the original concrete meaning, of a means of testing (Anth. Pal., VII, 54: ἀνδρῶν κρινομένων ἐν βασάνῳ σοφίης).

The word then undergoes a change in meaning. The original sense fades into the background. βάσανος now comes to denote "torture" or "the rack," espec. used with slaves (P. Lille, I, 29, 22; Ditt. Syll.3, 356, 12). βάσανος occurs in the sense of "torment" in Theocr. Idyll., 13, p. 13, 5, Meineke; Thom. Mag., p. 94, 4, Ritschl; Demetr. Eloc., 201, 4. An inscription from Cyprus (Salamis), BCH, 51 (1927), 148, 18, contains the malediction: ἐν βασάνοις ἀπόλοιτο. Vet. Val., IV, 13, p. 182, 19, Kroll has a reference to torments of soul (ψυχικὰς βασάνους).5

The change in meaning is best explained if we begin with the object of treatment. If we put men instead of metal or a coin, the stone of testing become torture or the rack. The metal which has survived the testing stone is subjected to harsher treatment. Man is in the same position when severely tested by torture. In the testing of metal an essential role was played by the thought of testing and proving genuineness. The rack is a means of showing the true state of affairs. In its proper sense it is a means of testing and proving, though also of punishment. Finally, even this special meaning was weakened and only the general element of torment remained.

In my studies, I look at the context of scriptures from different points of view; how is a word used throughout the Bible, in what context is the word used, what is the Holy Spirit telling me, and dictionaries. And thankfully, with a website such as this, I can put forth an idea to see how it shakes out; what are other Truth seekers seeing - 'in the witness of two or three let something be established". I very much value feedback. I don't want to be deceived or deceive anyone else!

The whole point of Gary's ministry is that there are better translations that help us better understand God's word.

So, beside the view on the meaning of words, what do you think about the Day of the Lord? I realize that the conventional thinking is that happens after the "church age", Jesus' literal reign for 1000 years.

God Bless  :Peace2:

The Day of the Lord began when God said, "Let light shine out of darkness". The life was the light of men and the darkness cannot overcome it.

"Awake O sleeper and Arise from the dead and the light of Christ will shine on you"

A person could say the day of the Lord is the awakening into Christ, whether it be an inner awakening in this life, or a forced awakening in the next.

The day is about reality and revelation and transparency and deliverance and reckoning. God brings the Day at times through Woes that send us to our knees. God brings the Day to entire nations reminding them that He is the source of all power.

The day has dawned, it is rising to the full noon. Walk in the light as children of the day. :o)

Mark 2:28 28 so that the Son of Mankind is Lord, also, of the sabbath."

That verse can be read as: Sabbath is the day of the Lord Jesus.
Sabbath day is the 7th day.
For God a 1000 years is like a day.

Now let's assume that next year it was exactly 6000 years ago Adam was created. That's 6 days in the eyes of God. So we are missing a 7th day that lasts a 1000 years.
A Sabbath millennium of Lord Jesus.

That view has some support elsewhere.
Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

It's often assumed God is stating man will not get older as 120 years or something similar. Many overlook the idiomatic meaning of the word year. I know of 3 meanings:
1] A regular year.
2] A Sabbath year. But it actually marks of 7 years. So year=7 years.
3] A Jubilee year, which marks of 49 or 50 years.* So year=49 or 50 years.

Before I continue point 3 can also be used to give the weeks of Daniel different durations.

*=Ok, scholars are still debating if a Jubilee cycle is 49 or 50 years. Unfortunately the answer isn't God says in "on the 50th year you shall..."
But IF the jubilee cycle is 50 years we have something very nice at hand because 120x50=6000=6 millennial days of the Father's giant week. And that simply says something big is gonna happen when the 6th expires and the Son comes to take hold of the 7th day He owns....

Don't you contradict yourself Sheila?
"eternal until" endless doesn't have a limit/until/end. Anyway I'm pretty sure the day of the Lord ends when Father becomes all-in-all. That's endless.

Quotesabbath[49] if you will..and I see our Father as the Jubilee Sabbath[50]  it is finished and God rested
The only thing Jesus  declared to have permanently ended whith those words is animal sacrifice. Being redeemed from the wages of sin just started. Other things where just partly finished justt started.

In your post Whitewings, you mention the 120X5 = 6000 years.

I have seen this before that the six days of creation relate to 6 different 1000 year periods.

According to the Hebrew calendar, we are currently at year 5774. Thus we are arriving at the beginning of the 6th thousand year period.

If that is the case, in about 25 years will start the "sixth day". And the sixth day is the day of Man.

Tying this in with the burial of Jesus for three days and three nights; could that be prophetic in that He will be physically not present on the Earth for 3000 years?

Should that be the case, then the physical return of Jesus is quite a ways off.

The world continuing on its present course will only get much worse! And faith will become less and less.
Luk 18:8  I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

Again, this is in view of the 120X50=6000 response.

It's quite sure that's not the correct year.

But perhaps we don't really need to figure out all that history and only have know certain dates in Jesus' life. All major events are keyed to blocks of 40 Jubilees.

My guess is 2015/2016 or 10 years later.
Yep, my conclusions/calculations conflict. One of the main problems with chronology is that it's all linked to secular dates which aren't 100% accurate.

QuoteTying this in with the burial of Jesus for three days and three nights; could that be prophetic in that He will be physically not present on the Earth for 3000 years?
In Hebrew counting a part of day or night counts for a full day or night. You are suggesting both the days and the nights last 500 years. 4 periods would be 2000 years. The remaining 2 periods can have a length anywhere between 1 second and 500 years. The day Jesus was put in the tomb was close to an end. But it counted as the full 12 hours. Check out the fast of queen Esther and see if she really fasted complete 24-hour days.

Should that be the case, then the physical return of Jesus is quite a ways off.

QuoteThe world continuing on its present course will only get much worse! And faith will become less and less.
Looks that way, but we never can be sure. So many ancient civilizations and big religions had just risen and disappeared. At that time nobody would have guessed something so big would just fade away. Just like UR it was professionally butchered and nearly faded away. Nearly....

Anyway, all that pinpointing His return is very interesting and more important it forces you to really study thw Bible because when you do, you likely find lots of stuff that seems to conflict but when zooming in it doesn't because you just learned a whole new way to look at things. The journey is just as important as the destination.

Interesting discussion. seems we want to figure out when prophetic events will occur and that does lead us into more study. It can be frustrating and yet enjoyable. When I was in WCG we were told Christs return would be in 1972, then 1975, all based on 19 year time cycles. Seems hillarious to me now. In so far as ...of His Kindgom, there shall be no end (consummation), at the end of the eons of the eons there will be no more rule or authority (no rulership or Kingdom (King) because all will be all in all.

1Co 15:24  Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
1Co 15:25  For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

The early Adventists studied their Bibles and settled on a certain day in the fall of 1844.  They made ascension robes for themselves, gave away their possessions, and sat on a hillside waiting...  It came to be called the Great Disappointment, an event still noted in American religious history.
Socrates taught Plato.  Plato taught Aristotle.  Aristotle tutored the son of Philip of Macedon.  This boy grew up to become Alexander the Great, largely by slaughtering a lot of people.  That's philosophy.

Jesus spoke the Truth.  He blessed the poor.  He healed the sick.  He even raised the dead.  He died on a cross for us, lived again, and came back long enough to tell us to love one another.  That's religion.

Based on what?

Based on Jesus is the sun of the day of the Lord. The Father is the light within that sun(God is the light and the Lamb is the Lamp). Ther is no Night of the Lord that will follow the Day. The night is what the Day is being born out of("It is God who said, "Light will shine out of darkness 2 Cor 4). The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it"

Death will be swallowed up by immortality, "Oh death where is your sting?" No more death, no more darkness. IMO thats the fulness of the Day. He is the Ancient of Days, the Father of Ages.

All the writings about the Day of the Lord conclude at the ALL IN ALL, at which point the last enemy has been vanquished and only life, light and love will remain, IMO- eternal Day.

Once all are in the Day, God will will be all in all. God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all. The Day of the Lord has historic, timeline, administration of the ages aspects...... but it is essentially the pathway into the Day of Days, the Age of Ages, the All in All- eternity

UNION WITH THE LIGHT

last paragraph

"Herein is another depth of meaning for Psalm 118:24 "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.    It is true, every morning, seven days a week, we can arise with the knowledge that He is in control of all our days, that our times are in His hand.  But there is so much more, for those who are in UNION WITH THE LIGHT are properly called His day.  Hence we no longer look just to the calendar for an understanding of the times, but we look to see what HE IS DOING IN A PEOPLE, they are His "signs of the times."

(If I understand your "historic, prophetic, metaphoric" reference in another thread, imo "day of the Lord" can be understood from all three perspectives: historic, prophetic, metaphoric)

eaglesway

Yea, that's what I believe. In fact, I believe all three perspectives are necessary for a mature understanding. But in order to walk in that understanding i personally believe the prophetic/metaphor is the most important.

"This the Day the Lord has made, Let us rejoice and be glad in it"

"Today, if you hear my voice, harden not your heart"

"Walk in the light a children of the day"

If we have that - then the historic implications, future or past, become somewhat irrelevant to us because of the assurance of God.
