Lake of Fire
Eternal Damnation
Unquenchable Fire
Gnashing of Teeth
Outer Darkness
Perish
Destroy
Brimstone
Torment
Condemnation

..these are scary words indeed; it is no wonder that many who read them are misled and confused as to their contextual  meaning. It is acknowledged that for the Word of God to be revealed to us for understanding, that it must be so through the Holy Spirit, yet many have believed in Christ as our saviour sent by God, nevertheless, they (I) remain in darkness of understanding as to the question of what is indeed that we are being saved from exactly, if not from eternal separation from God, either in the form of spiritual death, soul annihilation, of hell, then from who or what? Speak to me in layman's terms, please.

The lake of fire is the second death.

Eternal damnation is a bad translation for eonian penalty.

Unquenchable fire is for corpses in Gehenna not immortal souls in hell.

There will be gnashing of teeth of the unfaithful who are cast out of the kingdom of the heavens in Jerusalem into outer darkness.

Those who perish or are destroyed are only so during the eons until death is abolished.

Brimstone is sulfur.

Only the Adversary, the wild beast, and the false prophet will be tormented in the lake of fire because mortals will be dead.

There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.

The adversary, wild beast, and false prophet come to this world in human form. That is why many believers make the assumption that 99% (or so) of humanity will join them in being tormented for all eternity. Right now the false prophet seems to be Pope Francis.

Good point.

I think that the words
Evil
Wicked
ect

are also misconstrued.  How wicked and evil were/are they/we really?

The words are extreme in our thinking, but really I think they are overblown.  Our sin is missing the mark of the Archetype Christ.  For me it is no less then common.  Daily I see my missed mark.  It is a blessing to be able to see.  My wickedness is my teacher.

WOW on Pope Francis

I personally don't like to get into that whole thing about who's the false prophet and/or the anti-christ type of accusations, but hey, to each his own. I believe there's been lots of accusations thrown at many historical figures in that regards since age old, and I'm sure many of those accused have been some type of anti christ and/or false prophets, but that's not really where i was going with my inquiry. I am more a bit at a loss (although, I have been reading up on the subject) as to what exactly are we being saved from if is not from eternal separation from God, or from eternal sleep/death, or eternal torment? What are we being saved from if none of those apply to anyone?

The Bible says that we are saved from sin:

Matthew 1:21
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sin.

Here is what I think the fire, destruction, and darkness have to do with "he shall save people from their sin."

Isaiah 9
18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke. 19 Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

James 3
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of Gehenna.

I believe God uses sin as a form of judgment (see Romans 1) a way to punish and humble mankind (Jeremiah 2:19, ecclesiastes 1:13). In his parables, Jesus said that some would be bound and turned over to the outer darkness, and yet he also said that man loves the darkness (John 3:19). So, God turns man over to something he loves, so that he will be humbled and corrected through judgment. I think that is why God compares sin to fire, because fire is erosive and takes that which is large, and reduces it in size. It causes humility through the destruction.

And it all, I believe, revolves around the target of salvation expressed in Matthew 1:21, which is to be saved from sin.

I think most of us because of our church training think of salvation as something we look back to as a time when we repented and had some kind of high experience and we knew that God had met our need, for then at least, so considered ourselves 'saved'. Saved from hell most of us probably thought. But saved from being dead is more like it.

...Eph 2:4But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,...

John 5:24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. 25 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live....

Those who hear will live- as in now- not when we die and go to heaven.

John 3:36 "He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

God's wrath is what turns us from our way to His.

:iagree:

I believe there is a life which now is and is to come (1 Tim 4:10), as the Holy Spirit is a deposit of our inheritance.

Hi All,

Been a long time since I have posted but this post caught my eye.

I believe we are going to be saved from this flesh that we were born with. We will be given an immortal body that has no sin associated with it. "In Adam all die, in Christ shall all be made alive."

The Logos is complete, but it is not completely understood. http://www.hell-is-a-myth.webs.com/

anti_nietzsche

I can only speak as a layman either so don't worry.

First off, there is a difference between the announcements in the Gospels and Epistles, and the picture that is painted in the Revelation of John. The revelation is a text that many have questioned whether it would actually belong in the bible. While OT prophecy always came true, the same can't be said about the prophecy in the book of Revelation. IE, none of it came true so far.

About the rest, we must be sure to first look at God and THEN at the bible. The Father is good, Jesus Christ is good and the Holy Spirit is good, and together they make up God and God is good. We have a God who Himself was tormented and beaten and tortured and ultimately killed. This God does not condemn anyone and is about saving all of us.

Condemnation verses in the Gospels all have to do with God's doing away with the jewish state. Jesus said this would include destruction of the Temple, the siege of Jerusalem and so on. Jesus also said this would happen to the same generation that were standing there hearing Him. Gehenna, the word that Jesus uses in the Gospels and which has been translated as hell in the bible, refers to a valley outside of Jerusalem where corpses and refuse were burned. It was a place where the fire did not die and where many worms lived that ate the corpses. So when Jesus speaks about people being thrown into hell, He is speaking  about Jerusalem being assaulted and conquered and that those among the Jews who would resist, would be thrown into this valley of Gen-Hinnom, the Hebrew name of  that place otherwise called Gehenna.

So, as you can see, all the prophecy about judgment in the sense of condemnation, was already fulfilled with Jerusalem's destruction. This was never about afterlife condemnation. There is no afterlife condemnation because God the Father does not condemn and neither does Jesus the Son of God. About judgment, that is normal and it is encountered daily. It is about setting straight that which is crooked. For example, when the world abolished slavery two centuries ago, it was a judgment. When we understand that God opposes war, this is a judgment. When one is convicted of stealing being wrong, that is a judgment. When a mother stops hating her son and when a son stops hating his mother, this is a judgment. Judgment belongs to salvation and has a part in it. But if you believe in Jesus and do as He says, you actually never get into judgment.

Patinak

anti_nietzsche,

I really enjoyed your last post here, especially your view on judgement in the last paragraph.

As far as the Revelation of John, Tentmaker has a book "The Destruction of Jerusalem", by George Peter Holford, written in 1805, which has a lot of compelling evidence that at least part of the Revelation did pertain to the destruction of the city and temple.  A lot of it made sense to me, but you have to be able to accept an earlier dating of Revelation than is customary.

Thanks,
Pat
