Lazarus, the Rich Man & Hades

hi! The last time I read this parable I noticed how the word translated "hell" was "hades" (strong's #86 hades)

Which as we know was a part of Greek mythology.. you got to "hades" the underworld by the River Styx.. or the other place in the 'after life', the "Eluesian Fields"

So the rich man "being in torments in hades.." (Luke 16:23) to me, sounds different than in a burning hell.. as "hades" was myth (and surely Jewish folks knew that).. so the rich man was in a mythical (not real place) in a parable..

  spiritual life waters...having spent all his natural life quenching carnal desires/delicasies...surely

  the rich man was expierencing a drought of the waters of life.'fainted'..............the poor beggar having suffered

in the flesh..was succoured of the breasts of heaven....and due to God watering..had grown in relationship

with God.

Timely post as this parable has been on my mind lately.

I see hades in connection with sheol the state of the dead, who know nothing, no consciousness. So why was the rich man conscious in hades? Because I believe the parable is speaking about how Lazarus (representing the ones who were once not a people) is brought up from the dead spiritually by being placed under the fatherhood of Abraham.

The rich man on the other hand has no "water" no "spirit" because he did not believe. Therefore, he is spiritually dead and this is represented by hades and is why the rich man is depicted as being conscious in the grave.

1 Tim 5:6
But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives.

That spiritual state, that paradox, is perfectly aligned with the parable of the prodigal son.

  :gsmile:  I think you're right, Sheila! "outer darkness" (by not being in the Kingdom of Light?).. "there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.."

typified? by ancient Israel's day of atonement.. "a day of affliction.. weeping.. great remorse.."

rev 22:12-15 "and, behold, I come quickly, to give every man according as his work shall be.. ...blessed are they that ..have right to the tree of life and may enter in through the gates into the city...

but without are (will be?) dogs, and sorcerers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie."

cannot enter the gates of the city.. darkness without.. weeping and gnashing of teeth... like a great day of atonement (doa)

into the Holy city by faith[I have not found such a great faith in Israel!]

and the invitation to 'Come,take life's water's free" they do not enter in because of unbeleif/confusion

of Babylon's wine..so shee can make merchandise of them...and so she continue's to reduce them

to a loaf of bread............so that she may feed herself..and say 'I am a queen'

read His letter to the Laodecians..who say 'I aam rich and have need of nothing" His counsel to repent

  and buy from Him[without money] gold tried in the fire[faith in God and His son Jesus Christ].....

   lest what?   lest He remove their lampstand[or the candle of the Lord..and the light of the spirit go out

in them and they be in darkness spiritually...as the foolish virgins that took not enough oil along with them in

their vessels.........]

   Mt 6;3,4   God gives gifts of mercy in secret to these that our outside the city...and they enter in.....

    He may deny them before men and His angels..but He can not deny Himself[that He is the saviour of all

men] and He is kind even unto the wicked...they receive a new name and a new nature....... His jealousy

is a strong as the death they covenated with.  what they 'were' and what they are when made new....

   these 'prodigals'....though appearing to Him as but a 'servant' in the household that does not remain

forever..like a son..or showed themselves 'unworthy' to be called sons......are accepted backin..........

   and the accepting them back in..what is this but ....life from the dead.

  atthe wedding  God saves the best[wine for last.....thus the water turned to wine...the" rejoicing" in the

salvation

of all and the 'best/robe associated with it.............keys to open the word........those without 'wedding

garments"

uke 5;25...look what happens when this 'secret' is revealed......Meaanwhile the older son was in the feild

    when he came near the house he heard music and dancing. so he called one of the servants and asked

him what was going on..     He refused to join in the celebration...was angry over it....but his Father went

out and pleaded with him...........[how bout you..will Father have to plead with you?]  or will you rejoice

with Father..that all men are saved? will you love your brother as yourself? will you rejoice that the

brother that was dead is alive again?
