Title: Isaiah 66:23-24 and usage of "all"
Post by: Lorenzo on December 11, 2015, 11:32:43 PM
Hey guys,
I was reading the Bible and I happened to read Isaiah 66:23-24 (which I will not write here because I'm writing through my smartphone). In this passage it says that "all flesh will worship before God", but then it states that the corpses of the wicked will be an abhorrence to all flesh. First, it makes no linguistic sense, since "all flesh" should mean the corpses as well, so it might make us think of a particular usage of "all". But this cannot deal with Rom 5:18 and 1Cor 15:22, where "all" means all. Besides, the word corpses, together with the "offspring" in Isaiah 66:22, may suggest an earthly deliverance, but this clashes with the reference to new heavens and new earth.
So, my question is: does all mean all? what do u think about the whole text?

   Hi Lorenzo.
all mean all   ..    Well if God knew all  flesh   was corrupt and created it for His glory , same with His Spirit that those would also glory in Spirit & truth

I know that before I become "sin conscience " life was so much easier  and enjoyable  ,   desires of the flesh   are easy in the world to fulfill

I think of Paul's Romans  8 before the law come and made him sin conscience   , it  put him to death  , but said it was a good thing and   even better thing  that to believe in Jesus  Christ ,  to deliver him from that body of death   , so He could begin to Live in Christ  , being the Spirit & truth and worship  God perfectly ...

I  believe that is where most find them selves in     at one time or the other    being  delivered by Christ   to   the  above   thinking  [ higher ways of  knowing God    though Jesus Christ   the Wisdom  of God ..  from below    the earthly and sensual and devilish  wisdom

Both ways serve God    regardless   , proving     HIS WORD IS TRUE ,  my  :2c:

Perhaps "corpses of the wicked" are not classed as flesh because they are dead.  :2c: :2c: :2c: :2c: :2c:

I don't see Isaiah 66 as addressing the salvation of all mankind. Rather I see it as the establishment of the church in the world by which the world will be judged. I believe other scriptures handle the salvation of all mankind.

If all does not mean all, then what does it mean?  :dontknow:

It is not a matter of debate for me. All is all,and God will be ALL in ALL.  :cloud9:

  Very true Eduard ,

I think there is a lot more to the   concept of all    , than just a human standard and point of view .

If a person  can look beyond  human reasoning .

And realize the inward working     , of some things conceived in our minds     that  take  a hold of us  and drive us to react in  we ways that can be positve or negative ,  or new thoughts  and ideas  and some old things that   basically  die in you    ..

All in our house    , means all in a personal      way to me spiritually  speaking   ,  cleaning out or sin consciousness  of always being aware of evil in ourselves and everyone and everything else
the cleansing   or baptism   of death , focus on that  human aspect    though the law of sin consciousness    and guilt arises up in us  , under the old law of sin and death .

When we are baptised into Christ , the sin consciousness    ceases          and the grace of God comes and  cleans the mind and spirit to become free

of that focus  , and  looking for the good in everyone and everything , not the bad anylonger

So all starts in you   , on a personal  level and   this grace of GOD is spread    to others by  your  clean conscience   , the working of the Holy Spirit in you  and becomes the fruit of your lips  ,  from the fruits of the Spirit  working in you

It is supposed to be   like a ripple effect     for positive change   over the  negative ripple that when sin enters   and knowing we need  JESUS CHRIST   .. to put them things to death  or have an ending in you     .. so the new  and beautiful things of God can take ''root '   in LOVE and begin to grow inside of you

Each one is given that  opportunity  according to the grace of God in and though the working of the  Truth Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit  of God working though you
short answer ..
just  :2c:

This is generally speaking, but I think we as proponents of universal salvation should concede that "all" doesn't always refer to every single unit. For example, if i am in an apple orchard and I have a full basket of apples, and I say "take all the apples back to the house" that doesn't mean all the apples in the orchard, or in the world. It means all the apples in the basket. So yes, all means all, but what "all" refers to in the context of a sentence matters.

Hi Seth , I believe you have something there , its like harvest time   , all that is ready  is      taken for  Gods glory ,
where as there is always a harvest      and always  ready to be  taken and used for Gods glory at the  proper timing.

Gods  ways that are higher  than mans human reasoning    /ways   ..
All will eventually be harvested  and   Glorify God ...

Hi Seth,
maybe you're right, but it'd be a strong argument for ETers.Besides, one may ask: then why should it EVER mean all? In the verses of Paul's letters I quoted, we could argue that it is a parallel with Adam's curse, but what in other cases? Besides we still have the big question: what is this text of Isaiah all about?

I think those verses are referring to the period of time before the all in all. When the last enemy, death, is anulled(1 Cor 15) there will be no more dead people of any kind, corpses or second death/lake of fire, because all will have been subjected(Phil 2:9-11, 1 cor 15:25-27), all will have been reconciled(Col 1:15-20), all will have been gathered into one in Christ(Eph 1;9-11; Eph 4:7) and God will have become all in all(1 Cor 15:28; Rom 11:36).

the wicked have a certain type of celestial flesh[a spirit hath not flesh and blood] that is made of the dust of heaven...he[satan] has

been a dust eater from the beginning....there is terrestial flesh and there is celestial flesh...and we shall look upon the dead corpses

of the the "wicked" from whom He has delivered us all..and abhor them.[nothing hidden shall not be revealed/God knows what lies in

the darkness

the celestial is two different types...the holy angels/children of God...and the evil contrast substance.....two seeds....sons of God and

satan's. and the second death is reserved for satan and his demons.....  think not that satan is born of God from above..for those born

of God can not sin..and satan has been sinning from the beginning.......

Isaaih ch 14...reveals the  'real' man of sin/the original serpent.  Just as our bodies of dust dissolve and melt..in the terrestial....

so too, shall happen with satan's celestial body of celestial dust.

This is how one brother sees it:

QuoteJesus spoke more of Gehenna than of Hades. We will not do a complete study of Jesus' words about Gehenna, but it would be useful to look at one specific passage in Mark 9:47, 48,

47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell [Gehenna], 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Jesus was quoting and commenting upon Isaiah 66:24, which says,

24 Then they shall go forth and look on the corpses of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched[Greek: "is not quenched"]; and they shall be an abhorrence to all mankind.

Isaiah was writing specifically about the old and new Jerusalem (66:10) and the new heavens and the new earth (66:22). That is why Jesus used the term Gehenna, rather than Hades. It was a symbol of judgment upon the wicked. By the time Jesus walked the earth, Gehenna was no longer used for human sacrifice, but was the city dump. It was also the place where they cast the unclaimed bodies of criminals that had been executed or crucified. Like many dumps today, Gehenna was always smoldering, because it was fueled by the trash that people threw into it. But because it also contained organic matter, dead animals and men, it also was continuously infested with maggots ("worms").

It is often claimed that this is a picture of a burning "hell" torturing conscious sinners in an afterlife, but that is an extended and unwarranted interpretation of this passage. First of all, neither Isaiah nor Jesus meant to imply that the worms were immortal, but rather that there were always worms there. Maggots live for a while and die after breeding more maggots.

Likewise, the fire is not perpetual. The point is that no man can quench it. Only God can quench this fire. The NASB above shows the bias of the translators when it renders the phrase too strongly, "shall not be quenched." The literal rendering of the phrase is simply "is not quenched," that is, not by any man. That is, the fire of judgment will surely come, and no man can prevent it.

And from another one of this same brother's articles he writes..:

QuoteMost people would agree that the lake of fire is indeed God's judgment upon sinners. The real disagreement comes in defining the nature of that judgment, that is, the specifics of how it works out in practice. Is it a "literal" fire?  Is it a "spiritual" fire?  We believe it is not literal, but it is certainly of a spiritual nature, because the Law is spiritual (Romans 7:14).

All of our misunderstandings of the lake of fire would easily be solved by a study of God's Law. After all, this is the most relevant factor in this matter of judgment. Paul says in Romans 6:23, "for the wages of sin is death." Ezekiel 18:20 confirms this: "The person ["soul"] who sins will die."

Anyone who studies the divine law will see that death is the worst possible punishment that can be meted out. Even when a man was guilty of multiple murder, the maximum penalty was death. There is no sin worthy of being burned at the stake, much less being burned in a torture chamber for an eternity.

There were some instances where the dead body of the offender was to be cremated rather than buried (Joshua 7:25; Lev. 21:9). This was the most dishonorable way to die in Scripture. In the New Testament times, the bodies of such criminals were thrown into the valley of Hinnom, which was Jerusalem's city dump. It constantly burned, as even modern dumps do. In the Greek, this valley was called "Gehenna," and Jesus used it as a warning in Mark 9:42-50.

47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell [gehenna], 48 where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Take note that the worms here are not immortal or fireproof. The city dump constantly burned, and in the places where no flame had yet reached, there were countless worms, or maggots, to consume the garbage. But there is no record that anyone was ever cast into gehenna as a means of torture, except in ancient times, when the Canaanites caused their children to die by fire to the god, Molech. Jeremiah speaks of this in 32:35.

35 And they built the high places of Baal that are in the valley of Ben-hinnom to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire to Molech, which I had not commanded them nor had it entered My mind that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin.

This ungodly practice, performed in the valley of Ben-hinnom (i.e., "the son of Hinnom," or gehenna in Greek) was a direct result of their religious doctrine of the fiery underworld, a teaching that was well developed in Egypt, Babylon, and Canaan. The Hebrew Bible's description of the state of the dead stands in stark contrast, and the few times it does speak of fire are quite obviously symbolic.

When Jesus spoke of gehenna, he was simply quoting Isaiah 66:24, where the prophet speaks of the final battle at the end of the age. He closes with this description, which Jesus ascribes to gehenna:

24 Then they shall go forth and look on THE CORPSES of the men who have transgressed against Me. For their worm shall not die, and their fire shall not be quenched; and they shall be an abhorrence to all mankind.

This is hardly a description of eternal punishment in some spiritual torture chamber. It is very much an earthly scene, the kind we might expect to "go forth" and look upon after a disastrous war. On the other hand, it certainly is representative of the lake of fire, as we shall see. Yet there is no indication from this verse or from Jesus' quotation of it that men will be eternally tortured in gehenna. Torture was not a lawful biblical judgment.

Although some parallel does exist between gehenna (the city dump) and the lake of fire, the valley of Ben-hinnom, or "gehenna," was nothing like a lake. Jesus used the parallel in order to describe two things about the lake of fire: (1) the people would be outside the New Jerusalem; and (2) it would be a place of shame. Beyond this, the theme ends and only resurfaces under a different name and another kind of symbolism.

John did not call it gehenna, because the purpose of the literal gehenna did not adequately describe the fire flowing from God's throne, nor was gehenna a part of the temple symbolism which was John's primary theme throughout the book of Revelation.

One cannot begin to understand  unless the Holy Spirit gives it ,
Our faith is to God  , without faith to God  we can never please Him ....
and this is a very private thing .

Imagine  a great power  of electricity    coming though the  socket    ,  unless you are plugged in to that socket   , you will not have it
Many   go though the object   plugged in to the Socket      , the object is NOT GOD    it is the electricity though the Socket [ source ] Jesus Christ the Word and power of   the Spirit of Truth     ..

The new heavens and Earth are only given though Jesus Christ/ Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh  in us   , birthing those sons of  GOD  though the Word , His word is like a Fire   and the Spirit is also the SAME  consuming fire  / Our God is a consuming fire  Jer 23
Lying Prophets
...28"The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth. What does straw have in common with grain?" declares the LORD. 29"Is not My word like fire?" declares the LORD, "and like a hammer which shatters a rock? 30"Therefore behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who steal My words from each other.

Luke 12  You too, be continually ready; because the Son of Man is coming at an hour that you do not expect."   WE believe He come  and now coming to us   as individually as    sleeping at night in the darkness  , when you are jolted   awake by a great  power , noise and   sound of His voice   to rise ..

Peter said, "Lord, are You addressing this parable to us [disciples], or to everyone else as well?"

The Lord said, "Who then is the faithful and wise steward [of the estate], whom his master will put in charge over his household, to give his servants their portion of food at the proper time?

Blessed (happy, prosperous, to be admired) is that servant whom his master finds so doing when he arrives. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. But if that servant says in his heart, 'My master is taking his time in coming,' and begins to beat the servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

And that servant who knew his master's will, and yet did not get ready or act in accord with his will, will be beaten with many lashes [of the whip], but the one who did not know it and did things worthy of a beating, will receive only a few [lashes]. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.

"I have come to cast fire (judgment) on the earth; and how I wish that it were already kindled! I have a baptism [of great suffering] with which to be baptized, and how [greatly] I am distressed until it is accomplished! Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division [between believers and unbelievers]; for from now on five in one household will be divided [over Me], three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain,' and that is how it turns out. And when [you see that] a south wind is blowing, you say, 'It will be a hot day,' and it happens. You hypocrites (play-actors, pretenders)! You know how to analyze and intelligently interpret the appearance of the earth and sky [to forecast the weather], but why do you not intelligently interpret this present time?

"And why do you not even on your own initiative judge what is right?

JESUS CROSS WAS THAT SIGN   to get ready  for him    over 2000  years ago ,     we are  in it    all happening now big time ...

Hi Lorenzo,
New heavens and new earth?
I could defer to that same brother for a quote as I don't know anything myself. Reading the whole chapter and even the whole book of Isaiah is as we have all probably heard like a mini Bible survey. The first 39 chapters correlate with the Old Testament and the remaining 27 chapters with the new testament. Chapter 40 begins by introducing the voice crying in the wilderness which we know with our hindsight is John the baptiser. I just share that as an interesting thing to see.
So when we get to ch 66 the prophet is presumably telling us end time things.
So with Revelation 22 we also see John in the same prophetic stream speaking of a new heaven and a new earth...and a New Jerusalem. Doesn't seem like the Father is into second hand stuff does it? Behold I make all things new!
I think it is in Isa 25 or 26 where he speaks of removing the veil that is cast over all the earth...it is a covering which I believe is like a blinding influence. It is the Matrix that Neo brought down. That passage says He will create a feast of choice things upon the mountain and cast off the covering...Oh, hang on I better do God justice and quote the verse!

QuoteIsa 25:6  And in this mountain The LORD of hosts will make for all people A feast of choice pieces, A feast of wines on the lees, Of fat things full of marrow, Of well-refined wines on the lees.
Isa 25:7  And He will destroy on this mountain The surface of the covering cast over all people, And the veil that is spread over all nations.
Isa 25:8  He will swallow up death forever, And the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces; The rebuke of His people He will take away from all the earth; For the LORD has spoken.
Isa 25:9  And it will be said in that day: "Behold, this is our God; We have waited for Him, and He will save us. This is the LORD; We have waited for Him; We will be glad and rejoice in His salvation."

To me this was accomplished on Mount Moriah when our Father nailed His son to the cross like Abraham before Him."God Himself will provide a ram" Abe told Isaac. And the place was called Jehovah Jireh - The Lord our provider. In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided..halleujah!

QuoteGen 22:13  Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
Gen 22:14  And Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, "In the Mount of the LORD it shall be provided."

Isaiah says it is for all people...the Apostolic polyglot says:

QuoteIsa 25:6  And  [shall make a feast  the lord  of Hosts]  for all  the  nations;  upon   this mountain  they shall drink  in  gladness,  they shall drink  wine.
Isa 25:7  They shall anoint  with a perfumed liquid on  this mountain.  You deliver all these things  to the  nations, for  this plan  is for  all the nations.
Isa 25:8  [swallowed Death] prevailing; and  again [removed the lord God] every  tear from every face; [the scorn of the people he removed] from all the earth; for the mouth of the lord spoke.
Isa 25:9  And they shall say in that day, Behold,  our God  upon whom we hoped, even he shall deliver us. This is the lord . We waited for him, and we exulted and were glad over our deliverance.

This is the new heavens and the new earth to me....all peoples, even all nations coming to see that God has provided a feast of choice things in the Mount--the Cross--the person of Jesus Himself. That out of His person flows all the milk and honey that alone can satisfy our soul. We know from Paul in 1 Cor 15:23-28 that all nations will indeed be saved, even all people, BUT each in their own rank or order.
God says all things are made new and equally true He says all things are being made new...and all things will be made new. God is so amazing! In all of this "being made new" program that God is into, there are prophecies being fulfilled and callings lived out in every age. Nations rise and fall, judgements are meted out, reaping what was sown is experienced, until all flesh stops it's mouth and stands in awe before the living God confessing that all our righteousness is in Him, that we have none of our own.

QuoteIsa 45:22  "Look to Me, and be saved, All you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.
Isa 45:23  I have sworn by Myself; The word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, And shall not return, That to Me every knee shall bow, Every tongue shall take an oath.
Isa 45:24  He shall say, 'Surely in the LORD I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, And all shall be ashamed Who are incensed against Him.

In one sense we are already in the new heavens and the new earth. Born again spirit's cleansed by faith in the blood of Jesus. Also by faith we confess that our bodies are His temple and dwelling place. But we hope and endure in hope that one day we will be further clothed and mortality will be swallowed up in Life.

hi Lorenzo, I think it's a question of before and after... at the conclusion at the unveiling when man's ways fail (collectively, imo) and at "armageddon" when He comes with angels and in fire-also said in this chapter, Isaiah 66 -

the fallen corpses will be a repulsive reminder - forever in hearts and minds of all - what a horror any tiny speck of sin is!! LOOK where it leads.. selfishness, imperfection.. a bottomless pit of potential horror/darkness..

I imagine the whole thing, ultimately, will be in some way like a filmstrip.. all history, in all its relentless horror, recorded for all eyes.. so that all eyes will see (also perceive, understand). I believe too, this is how "every eye will see" / be able to see His return, even those who are not alive at His return.

I agree Marie. IMO, The consciousness that will come when he tears the veil that covers the spiritual realm will be deep and universal- altho not all will yield to it immediately as I understand it, all will be confronted with it, as the world will be immersed in rivers of living water(The glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the water covers the sea).

Isaiah 25:7 JPS Tanakh 1917
And He will destroy(tear, swallow up) in this mountain The face of the covering that is cast over all peoples, And the veil that is spread over all nations.

2 Cor 5 NASB
And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God....

Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;

9but just as it is written,
"THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD,
AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN,
ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM."

10For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.

14But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.

The light of God is a fire that will consume the shroud of death, revealing life eternal, and nullifying the principalities and powers of this perverse generation.

1 Cor 15 NASB
For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. 55"O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?"

Romans 8 NASB
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God

Col 3:4 NASB
If then you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.

Hebrews 12 NASB
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better than the blood of Abel.

Great posts everyone    :dsunny:

I love that also and there is a simplicity in Christ     ,   the new  heavens and earth spiritually speaking     to me  ,

is the new mind of Christ over the carnal one [ Heavens ]  seated with Christ in heavenly places
and new earth is the Body of Christ [ Living in God ]    the old earth in Adam is  body of death [Romans 8]

I love that the "I Am" is a God of being.

The new heavens and new earth is in us, "For if any man be in Christ Jesus, he is a new creation, old things pass away, all things become new."

We are the seeds of its coming forth in the earth.

" By the word of truth He brought us forth as a kind of first fruits of His creation."

"For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20For the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God."

"But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells."

Righteousness dwells in us, and we are carrying the sheaves of the first fruits of the harvest :o)

Love those   scriptures    and thoughts  :HeartThrob:

Bringing in the sheaves  :dsunny:

1 Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
Chorus:
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves;
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.
2 Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest, and the labor ended,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. (Chorus)
3 Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master,
Tho' the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping's over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves. (Chorus)
