Title: Does universal salvation "run contrary to almost every chapter in the Bible"?
Post by: Jon on December 21, 2008, 06:44:45 PM
Whoever wrote this article - http://www.gospelhour.net/2092.html - claims so, yet strangely does not offer what I'd describe as much in the way of evidence to back up his assertion. I mean, whereabouts in the Old Testament (except maybe Daniel 12:2) is the promise or threat of post-mortem reward or suffering stated in anything like an unambiguous manner? And what is one supposed to make of a parable such as that of the prodigal son (what with his father's refusal to give up on him even though many wouldn't have blamed him if he had) if the Bible really does teach repeatedly from cover to cover that God is nothing like that wayward son's enduring father? (I also think that the implications of 2 Sam. 14:14 are interesting if one interprets it at face value and as applying to all times and situations despite the fact that to treat it as such would likely be taking it out of context.)

I sent an email to the owner(s) of the site that the above-linked article is from about a year ago asking more or less the same questions, but never received a reply. Would be interested to know what they get in the way of a response however if anyone else should give it a try and have more luck than I did.

Just one quick comment...the OT seems to be about temporal, earthly punishments, not "eternal hell" ones.  For example, "thou shalt surely die"...not, "thou shalt forever be in a burning hell"...
