When did Jesus' ministry start?
« on: April 30, 2014, 01:11:17 AM »
Shortly before baptism?
Shortly after baptism?
After 40 days in the wilderness?
After He chose the 12?
In the Synagogue of Capricorn?
Wedding in Cana?
Other?

PS I'm not talking about the year/exact date.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

Some say Jesus began His earthly ministry at the age of 12 -- Luke 2:41
and His heavenly ministry after His ascension. --making intercession for us.

but I am thinking that Jesus began His ministry at the moment He was conceived
Luke 1:31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name JESUS.

Matt 1:21  And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name JESUS; for he shall save His people from their sin.

(Prophecy fulfilled)

v. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
v. 23  Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God is with us.  (see Isaiah 7:14)

Mary visits Elizabeth
Luke 1: 41  And it came to pass that, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
v 42   And she spoke out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
v 43   And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
v 44  For lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
v 45  And blessed is she that BELIEVED: for there shall be performed of those things which were told her from the Lord.

(Prophecy fulfilled0
Luke 1:13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias; for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
v 14   And thou shall have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
v 15   For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

just thinking...

I don't think so because a rabbi/priest/teacher had to be at least 30 years old.

WhiteWings, I'm very interested in your thoughts re: When did Jesus's ministry start.  And also, very, very interested in your definition of "ministry".  Thanks.

I would say the time He was teaching on the things of God.
While I totally can accept the view that Jesus spoke wise words long before He was baptized I think His official ministry didn't start before He was 30. He was "about 30" (Luke 3:23).
For me personally that's a fact. But as a wrote in my OP I'm not so sure when He exactly started.

In the Synagogue of Capricorn is high on my list. The words He spoke there, where about  Jubilee. It has a lot of symbolic value. But then so has the HS descending like a dove....

I most certainly don't reject that possibility but it can be argued He wasn't ready yet because He didn't select the 12 yet. He didn't have His 40 days of wilderness yet.
The way I see it all suggestions on my list are all ok but obviously only one is correct.

One needs to do a time line study of the gospels to determine when His ministry began because:

Mar_1:14  Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

I will look at the parallel gospel accounts to see when He started to preach. Logics suggest it was after He was baptised and when He reached age 30.

Good points. Seems like His ministry would have started at age 30 consistent with the teachings of the OC priesthood. A few moer tid bits for looking at this:

He died in the midst of the week (Dan 9:27). Week has several meaning; one of them is a period of 7 years a Sabbath cycle. We know He died shortly before Passover. If we count back a half week, 3.5 years from that point we arrive at Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year. Imo Jesus was born on Rosh Hashanah, so that aligns quite well with "about 30". His baptism is a perfect pattern of the scapegoat sacrifice.  I may be splitting hairs*, but the scapegoat was 10 days after new year making His Ministry 10 days shorter than 3.5 years. Needless to say the 40 days in the wilderness make it 50 days short. The reading in the Synagogue of Capricorn was likely at Passover. (exacatly 3 year ministry)

Anyway Dan 9:27 forces the ministry to start at baptism. But I'm very much aware opinions vary greatly on who is confirming the covenant in Dan 9:27.
Some say Jesus. See above.
Some say satan and his 7 years of tribulation.
Some say both. Considering satan wants to take the throne of God by imitating Him it's quite likely satan will do a mirror covenant of Jesus....

*=I've spend many many hours splitting hairs and usually the outcome was that God is the Supreme hair splitter. His patterns simply are exactly right, not "about right".
Conception, birth, dedication, death and resurrection are all on Holy Festival Days. Then it's not a wild guess to assume baptism was on one too.
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

When did Jesus begin his ministry?  You know, I couldn't resist this one.  He began his ministry in the same place where the northern kingdom, the house of Israel was told by God they were Lo-ammi, not a people, not My people, fulfilling Old Testament prophecy, in Galilee of the Gentiles.

12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;  13 and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:  14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,  15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;  16 the people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadowof death light is sprung up.

17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

--Mat 4

Old Testament Prophecy:

1But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. 2The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. 3You shall multiply the nation, You shall increase their gladness; They will be glad in Your presence As with the gladness of harvest, As menrejoice when they divide the spoil.

---Isaiah 9

8 Now when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, she conceived, and bare a son.  9 Then said God, Call his name Lo-ammi: for ye are not my people, and I will not be your God.

10 Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

--Hosea 1

Praise God!  He didn't forget us!
