How to use the quote feature

In a post there is a button Quote

This will bring up a reply box and insert the text like this

[ quote author=poster you are quoting]
Posters text will be here followed by
[/quote ]

The correct way to start you reply is to go to the [/quote ] and press enter then start typing.

This will give this result

Quote from: poster you are quoting
Posters text will be here followed by

Your reply/comment text here

If you do this

[ quote author=poster you are quoting=topic=15.msg110#msg110 date=1186263004]
Posters text will be here followed by

Your reply/comments here
[/quote ]

you will get this

Quote from: poster you are quoting
Posters text will be here followed by

Your reply/comments here

This make it difficult for others to differentiate your comments from the previous poster you are quoting.

Quoting a posts with posts already quoted

Quote from: 4th poster
Quote from: 3rd Poster
Quote from: 2nd Poster
Quote from: 1st Poster
1st Posters text here

2nd Posters Quote

3rd Poster's Text

4th Poster's Text

This is what you will start with when you select the quote button

[ quote author=4th poster link=topic=3.msg437#msg437 date=1186568462]
[ quote author=3rd Poster link=topic=3.msg436#msg436 date=1186568431]
[ quote author=2nd Poster link=topic=3.msg37#msg37 date=1186118078]
[ quote author=1st Poster link=topic=3.msg28#msg28 date=1186114912]
1st Posters text here

[ /quote]

2nd Posters Quote

[ /quote]

3rd Poster's Text
[ /quote]

4th Poster's Text
[ /quote]

To reply specifically to the 4th poster and ignore the previous 3 posts quoted do this.  Highlight the bits you do not want (blue text) and delete.

[ quote author=4th poster link=topic=3.msg437#msg437 date=1186568462]
[ quote author=3rd Poster link=topic=3.msg436#msg436 date=1186568431]
[ quote author=2nd Poster link=topic=3.msg37#msg37 date=1186118078]
[ quote author=1st Poster link=topic=3.msg28#msg28 date=1186114912]
1st Posters text here

[ /quote]

2nd Posters Quote

[ /quote]

3rd Poster's Text
[ /quote]

4th Poster's Text
[ /quote]

You will be left with this

[ quote author=4th poster link=topic=3.msg437#msg437 date=1186568462]

4th Poster's Text
[ /quote]

Your reply/comments here

and will look like this when posted

Quote from: 4th poster

4th Poster's Text

Your reply/comments here

Quoting and answering long texts

Lets say you have multiple items in a post you want to respond to.

[ quote author=poster you are quoting=topic=15.msg110#msg110 date=1186263004]
first statement

second statement

third statement

[/quote ]

will look like this

Quote from: poster you are quoting
first statement

second statement

third statement

To differentiate your comments from the quoted post do this

[ quote author=poster you are quoting=topic=15.msg110#msg110 date=1186263004]
first statement [/quote ]<-- insert a end quote tag

response to first statement

[quote ]<-- insert a start quote tag
second statement[/quote ]<-- insert an end quote tag

response to second statement

[quote ]<-- insert a start quote tag
third statement[/quote ]<-- insert an end quote tag

response to third statement

This will then look like this when posted

Quote from: poster you are quoting=topic=15.msg110#msg110 date=1186263004
first statement

response to first statement

Quote
second statement

response to second statement

Quote
third statement

response to third statement

You can see how it will look with the preview button, the preview comes at the top of the screen.  Scroll up to view it.

Looks complicated but once you have the knack, it is easy.

I personally prefer copying and pasting and the differentiating by color.

We are looking into a WYSIWYG editor add-on which will do this automatically for you.  The new release will have this built in.

Just another tip using quotes

[ quote ]Something that Harry said.....[ /quote ]

Looks like this

Quote
Something that Harry said.....

In the 1st quote, add an = and type in the name of who you are quoting

[ quote=Harry ]Something that Harry said.....[ /quote ]

Looks like this

Quote from: Harry
Something that Harry said.....

This helps to identify who you are replying to when you choose multiple people to reply to in one post

Imbedded quotes

[ quote]Something Fred said...

[ quote]Something I said to Fred[ /quote][ /quote] <- notice double "close quote"

Now something more I want to say to Fred...

looks like this

Quote
Something Fred said...

Quote
Something I said to Fred

Now something more I want to say to Fred...

Remember no spaces in the quote brackets
