When I press "Show unread posts since last visit", it always takes me to a page that says that I have no unread posts. I can only see the latest posts at the bottom of the home forum page.

Is the link broken?

I have that too. "Show new replies to your post" solves it. But that's mainly because I'm part of almost every thread...
Also just looking at the icons before the section names gives an indication were new posts can be found.

Possibly it's a cookie issue. You could try to wipe your browser cache.
(no guarantees)
1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

I no longer have an unread topics button if I go to the home screen.  I can do it from my browsers history,
forum/unread topics.

Scroll down and click on

"view the most recent posts on the forum"

This will bring up pages of the most recent posts by date.

You can scroll back to date of your last visit.

[that doesn't answer your question but it solves your problem]
