Search tips for Google
« on: January 03, 2010, 06:08:47 PM »
Everybody has used Google. But perhaps not all know the 'advanced' features.
Don't type the stuff between [...] It's merly to show the number of files found at the date of writing this post.

If you only want to search on Tentmaker type: +site:http://www.tentmaker.org/ [~1700 found]
Quote
+site:http://www.tentmaker.org/
If you only want pdf files add: +filetype:pdf    [16 found]
Quote
site:+http://www.tentmaker.org/ +filetype:pdf
Say you want only documents about Jesus. Add: + Jesus  [14 found]
Quote
site:+http://www.tentmaker.org/ +filetype:pdf +Jesus
If you don't like Luke add: -Luke [14 found]
Quote
site:+http://www.tentmaker.org +filetype:pdf +jesus -luke
If you also want the word christ in the hits. Add +christ [7 found]
Quote
+site:http://www.tentmaker.org +filetype:pdf +jesus -luke +christ
The above searches are anywhere in the documents found.
So Jesus can be mentioned on page 13 and Christ on page 300.
If you want to find the words next to eachother use ""
Remove +Jesus and +Christ and add: +"Jesus Christ"   [5 found]
Quote
+site:http://www.tentmaker.org +filetype:pdf +"jesus christ" -luke
If you don't want "Jesus Christ" in the results use the minus sign. [4 found]
Quote
+site:http://www.tentmaker.org +filetype:pdf -"jesus christ" -luke
Say you hate pdf documents then change it into -filetype:pdf [~1020 found]
Quote
+site:http://www.tentmaker.org -filetype:pdf -"jesus christ" -luke

To summarize:
+ forces something to be included in a search.
- forces something to be omitted from a search.
+filetype:something forces the found documents of that type
-filetype:something ignores files of a certain type
"......." seaches an exact sentence.

Note #1: + signs don't need to be used. No sign is assumed to be a + sign.
Note #2: upper and lower case are of no importance.
Note #3: special characters like !@#$%^&*() are ignored mostly. Tricky to explain. Avoid.
Note #4: order of the search string is not important

+JEsus -luke gives the same results as -LuKE +jeSUS or -Luke +Jesus!!!!

As written above +"Jesus Christ" finds that combination.
But sometimes you alse want variations on the above.
"Jesus the Christ", "Jesus also called christ"
You can simply search for them all (see below) but often a * is the simpler.
"Jesus*christ" finds anything.
Something like "Jesus*christ*" doesn't work.

| stands for OR. It's not a uppercase i. It's just left of the return key.

+"Jesus Christ"|"Jesus the Christ"|"Jesus also called christ"
finds documents containing one or more of the above
Unlike the * it won't find: Jesus the divine chris"t.

1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in the one who declares the ungodly righteous ...

I added a few thing to the first post.
A special subset op Google is "Google Scholar" It contains only works of higher quality.
http://scholar.google.com

All the search methods work with it.
Under the advanced button you can add for example the author.
For simple searches the advanced tab is good for an intial search. But if you get to much results or simply want to refine things the manual way is the way to go.

Search for aionios and you get lots of books.
If you enter Balfour in the Author box you only have a few results.

aionios auteur:balfour   => give the same results.

You now should have found THIS book.

Is there anything that'll bring up extra stuff when doing a definition search that would make it more exhaustive?  I usually use the

define:

command before anything that I'm looking for google to bring up definitions on, but every once in a while, I'm under impressed or it doesn't bring up definitions it'll bring up for legitimate alternative spellings that I run across later via a peak in a dictionary or while reading something that I decide to google it on, if I'm thrown about the spelling, only to find out it brings up everything the previous search brought up and then some.  I use google more as a spell check than anything else while writing something 'cause obviously if my word's not recognized or if I find out that the definition it brings up isn't quite what I've got in mind, then I'll use a different word.
