Question for anyone....
« on: October 13, 2010, 07:49:20 PM »
 :sigh: Is anyone else experiencing this? When I try to type a reply on here, the screen starts "bouncing" down with every keystroke, making it impossible to see what was just written, while you're writing it. It's really annoying and I don't know if it's my computer or if the board is ????  :dontknow:

Did you read my reply in PM?

I'm 'guessing' you are using MS IE 8

Card,
It just might be your mouse, or the little wheel thing on the mouse, or maybe one of the keys on the keyboard is stuck.

 :cloud9: No, it's definitely something happening to me on the board, as it doesn't do it any other time. And EXACTLY, that's part of what's driving me crazy. Typos take forever to fix now, LOL.....

I've had this happen at various times, although not currently.  It is frustrating.

I've forwarded the concern to Gary.  If it's not fixed within 24 hours or so, plz let me know.  Thanks, James.

James, it's not a forum issue. It's strickly (AFAIK) a IE8 issue

Thanks, I've also forwarded your reply to Gary.  There may be nothing to do re: the forum, if not, then do you recommend something for folks who're having the problem?  Anything to do re: IE8 other than not use it?

Try the marked button and see it makes any difference.

If not:
- Write you posts in Notepad or similar.
- Use IE6/7
- Use Greenbrowser
- Use Firefox
- Use Google Chrome. Free. Download HERE -> A very basic and fast browser. (good for slow systems)

Just search for "Compatiblity view" and you will find quite a few people with this problem. It also will be clear Microsoft messed things up but as usual it's not them to blame but "old websites"

Hi everybody,

Gary told me about something not working right when typing in posts here.

I'm trying it out now. Using Firefox right now.

The screen is stable.

Before I try another browser, I'll try editing this post.
(It worked fine.)

Ok, now to try with IE. However, I don't think I have IE8, and I don't want it. I'll see how IE7 behaves, though.

Hi Again,

Now using IE7 to make this test post.

I see a flickering black square instead of the normal cursor.

But, the screen is not jumping.

Hmmm...this cursor is a bit annoying. I think there is a way to repair the browser to make the cursor back to normal.

I'll be back.

Karen

Chrome isn't a plugin. Are you using Chrom efor browsing? It doesn't fix anything for IE.
BTW what IE version do you use?

Hi again,

Well, I found a way to make the cursor not a black square.

It is still flickering, but when just a thin vertical line, it's usable, at least.

On your Windows computer:
Click the start button>control panel>Accessibility Options>open Display tab
Then find the "Width" slider and choose the size for the cursor, (I slid the slider all the way to the left on my computer) then click Apply, then OK.

You can also change the blinking rate with the other"Blink Rate" slider. I set the blink rate a bit slower than half way along the slider bar, but here in the forum posting box the cursor is blinking much faster than when not in this message posting box.

Try following the directions above and see if it improves things when posting your messages.

Please let me know what happens.

Thanks,
Karen

The screen is stable.
Is your Bookmark Toolbar empty?

Why is my Firefox window bouncing?
This is a bug and it is caused by your 'Bookmark Toolbar' being empty. You can either add a bookmark to it by drop and dragging a link on the toolbar or you can hide this toolbar via 'View->Toolbars->Bookmark Toolbar'.

Ok, now to try with IE. However, I don't think I have IE8, and I don't want it. I'll see how IE7 behaves, though.
Better don't get Win 7 then. It's preinstalled.
Many have the problem but I can't reproduce it with IE8.
I only did a few tests; and because I stopped using IE about 7 years ago I can't say I have much experience with it (on this forum)
If I could reproduce the bug I maybe could find a fix.

Card are you using the quick reply box?
Does your whole browser jump? Or just the text entry window? Or just the text itself?
Did you install something just before teh behavior started?

Hi even yet again,

I found a long discussion thread about the bouncing when entering a long post in the posting textbox at the Simple Machines Forum forum.

The problem is a bug in IE8.

Here's a link to the discussion there if you're interested:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=309186.0

Some of the people on that thread are saying that if you click the "compatibility mode" button that is located just to the right of the location bar in IE8, the problem will stop. (the button for the compatibility mode looks like a little paper torn across the middle. White Wings put a little screenshot of the button in a post above, but on my screen the image is small enough that I think I need stronger glasses to actually see what it looks like.)

If you're using IE8, try the "compatibility mode" when you're here. Please let me know how it goes.

Thanks,
Karen

P.S. In the discussion about this issue at the SMF forum, the problem most people reported just occurs when they put in a post that goes beyond the text box, causing a scroll bar to appear at the right. I'm deliberately jabbering on and on here to make sure that there isn't a problem with a longer post usin IE7.

I can type here without a problem, the scroll bar does not jump back up to the top. That is what has been happening to people, when they type or paste a long message into the post box, the scrollbar keeps jumping up to the top.

Karen,

From one of the SMF developers.

There's another fix. You can add code to the head section in index.template.php.

Code: [Select]
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
No, because it used to work anywhere inside <head>, but the only rumour we have is that it now needs to be just above the closing </head>

You can force IE7 compatibility for all IE8 browsers automatically so you don't have to worry about explaining to users how to do it themselves by adding the code below to the head section of your themes index.template.php
Code: [Select]

Quote
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

example:

Quote
<head>
   <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=', $context['character_set'], '" />
   <meta name="description" content="', $context['page_title'], '" />',
   <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />

1 Timothy 2:3-4  ...God our Savior;  Who will have all men to be saved...
John 12:47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

But I guess it doesn't work because I assume Cardinal would first click that button before downloading Chrome.... :dontknow:

Thanks for all your help, White Wings.

I am reading further through the threads at SMF forum and it sounds like putting the code to force IE7 code can lead to other problems that exist in IE7.

There is a supposedly "easy" fix for the version 2 of Simple Machines Forum, but the file that needs editing there does not even exist in the version 1 of the forum that we are using here.

I'll err on the conservative side for the time being and say "Everyone using IE8, please click the "compatibility mode" button in your browser to avoid the bouncing textbox when entering a long post that extends below the range of the text entry area."
