Hi junkbunny.

I have not seen the movie you reference, but have taught The Crucible by Arthur Miller for many years in my classroom.  I am also a relative of Rebecca Nurse and Mary Easty, two of the victims of the witch trials.

Yes, Puritanism is still practiced today.  Calvinism, the idea that there are some people who are Elect, is alive and well.  I grew up in a church that believed in this.  The Puritans morphed into the Congregational church, but I'm not sure to what degree Congregationalists are also Calvinists.

I think the revulsion you felt watching this movie is evidence of a very simple truth of the world -- you become what you worship.  Worship at its deepest level is a desire to imitate or resemble something, I believe.  If people worship a being who sees some humans as garbage to be thrown into an eternal garbage pit, those people will eventually treat those people as garbage too.  The Bible states this truth when it says that Christians will be recognizable by their fruit.

 Last week, doing genealogy research I came across the 1208

  heresy crusade against southern France. The heretics

 were at difference with the church over the worship in churches,

 the sacrements and the material wealth of the church .


   There are many spiritual idol monsters worshipped by men

 with heinous acts of worship offered up. Those that worshipped

Molech would place their children in the metal image of him,

a fire was inside the image and it glowed red hot from heat.
 

   I personaly have been accused of being a witch before,

due to fore-knowledge given by the Holy spirit. Satan has a

counter-part for every gift of God, and twists and perverts

such things for evil. The pharisee's accused Jesus of casting out

 demons by  the power of satan, in reality it was satan's seed

in them accusing Him.There was a maiden that had a familiar

spirit and fore-casting enriched her master

    Many atrocities have been committed in the name of God,

 the power of the kingdom of darkness to do evil and continue

the slandering of God's name causes people to think they

are doing God a service.

   Wittnessing the ugly evil distortions we will all the more

rejoice at the BEAUTY of HIS TRUTH

   Are there real witches? yes, satan worshipper's?yes

serial killers?,yes child molesters?yes. We can NOT deny

that there are 'vessels' used for dis-honourable use. For whtever

reason,God has given them over to it at present[serve as

example of evil] And the secular authorities deal with such

lawlessness as this. They suffer as an evil-doer. We are not to

suffer for evil-doing, but if we suffer for doing right..then God

may use us for an honorable purpose[vessel of mercy]

   It is God himself who is working this exercize of good and evil

 expierance for the eternal good of all. Wittnessing the

manifestation of the lawless one/evil in this earth,

the horror of sin is eternally evidenced.

   He has promised an end to such,and we await our total

deliverance from evil,as even the men that have been given

totally over to it,do.

    Ezekiel 9;3  Then the Lord called to the man in linen who had

 the writing kit at his side,and said to him.'Go throughout the

city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who

 lament and greive over all the detestable things that are done

in it.

I believe in witches (though I realise you were asking sheila).  However I know I WOULDN'T believe in them if I hadn't witnessed my older sister performing witchcraft as a teenager. 

What I took from sheila's post is that for reasons unknown to us right now, God has let the people mentioned be evil-doers, at the present time.. but I felt it was implied that this will not be the case forever.

Amen  .  Vessels chosen for honor and dishonor - vessels fitted for destruction.  The Potter de-structs, (breaks) then remakes.  All serving HIS PLAN.  All in His hands.

   I didn't realize your comment was directed to me.

   Good posts, you guys.  We have many examples in the

 scriptures that Father does indeed do these things.

   A prime example is when He delivered Israel from Egypt..

  the man that had the role of Pharoah, was raised up by God

  for a purpose. Also, Sodom and Gomorrah. Yet, we have His

 word in the scriptures of restoration.


   My daughter got involved in the occult, spells etc..and a

whole pandora's box of evil was opened through this.Bringing

much suffering on all.Praise God for her deliverance, for she

actually lost her sanity for a time..and still struggles at times,

 as we all do against sin in our own bodies,to differing degrees.


    Also, my nephew's ex almost killed him through a spell to

  get money , my daughter had an inkling and found evidence

 in her freezer[hair?] don't ask me the particulars, I don't know.

  but a lot of prayer and a miracle was worked by God to save

his life[hospital personel declared it a miracle and there was a

big write up in the local paper about it,even] He started

hemorrhaging from his lungs and kidneys and was given up for

 dead.

   Yes, all is in his 'capable' hands

When Jesus died on the cross.  And when God has planned a person to realise this forgiveness and turn to Him, according with the plan He has for each individual person.

The only two things that I'll say about the Salem Witch Trials is that it's one of those things in American History where you can't have anything approximating the truth outside of primary first generation source materials related to the incidents, diaries, etc. Secondly, had they been successful, slavery would have never gotten the type of stranglehold over this country that it got, so generations paid for the failure to successfully purge witchcraft from the land. I don't mean to be cryptic & esoteric about it, or to seem to oversimplify, but it went deeper than a bunch of school age kids throwing charges around. It got weird for a while & that wasn't successfully dealt with. Most people these days only know 20th century interpretations of those events that don't go deeply enough in research on what was really going on back then. But obviously without hundreds of pages of specifics being reproduced here, even on my part, then a successful argument for dealing firmly with it can never be established here, but...it's ancient history & now the land is plagued with bondage, witchcraft, homosexuality, Hollywood, & other issues, but the iniquity of the land WILL BE purged from the land in one day, we're assured in Zechariah.

It's one of those things, like finding out that one of the reasons for the American Civil War was the South, besides seceding from the Union over the slavery issue, per the articles of Confederation that specify it both in their title and in their specifics, I've heard it from both Unitarian and Southern Baptist scholars that the Civil War was also to keep UR out of the South.  It's one of those things, as I was going to say, where you dig deep enough and you're just creeped out 'cause it's one of those issues like the Civil War where you've got polarization on the part of one of the sides of interpretation on it.  These Calvinists back then were God-fearing people and their ideas about ET were among a few of their fallacies.  These were also the people looking, in modern times, at the issue of Postmillenialism and we've got quite a few people around here that would agree with them on THAT, so these people were TRYING TO walk the straight and narrow and weren't just religious wild cards like Calvin's Geneva or whatever, where Bibles were few and far between.  People came here specifically having in mind getting back to the Book, and if they felt the need to go that far with their Theonomy, there's more than meets the eye and quite a bit to dig out on the topic that's genuinely sad.
