RLV, I just wanted to tell you what a great comfort you have been to me through this--as a witness to what you have seen here. This whole thing has hurt my heart so much. It just seems that whenever a great talent enters this awful world, it has to be crucified, spit on, and trashed. This man soared to heights that most of us will never see--so we have two choices, look up, be glad for him, and enjoy what he is sharing with us, or pull him down to our level and trample him under our feet. His life was a tragedy, but I know for sure from his music and dancing that he did have moments of pure joy and knew God.
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
