Have you ever prayed for things you didn't get? (duh) Any of these ring a bell?
He prayed his relationship would work out...that's just the girl he wanted to marry. It didn't work out. The pain was severe. He was angry with God, and his faith diminished. He was lonely, confused, and wandered through life and relationships for several years. He ended up marrying someone else. Over the years, their relationship grew. Through prayer and trials they became partners and friends. She became the pillar of their relationship, the stability, and the love he needed. The girl he had wanted to marry continued in her selfish, rebellious ways that had ended their relationship in the first place. Twenty years later he realized how much he'd been blessed by first of all not marrying her, and secondly, becoming one with the sweet love of his life.

A woman lost her job. It was the job she had "waited for her whole life". She was esteemed, felt important and fulfilled. Quickly she began to realize how stressful it was. She ended up in the hospital with chest pain and migraines. In the back of her mind she knew it was the job, that things weren't as she had hoped, and in fact, that it was killing her. But she hung on...this was, after all, the job of her life. A few weeks later she got escorted out of the building...fired. She was distraught, angry, disillusioned. She prayed to die, but lived instead. In the midst of her sorrow, she spent time on her knees and was led to seek answers to some questions that had been fermenting in the back of her mind for her whole life. 3 months later she realized she was recovering, God had blessed with new, better circumstances...including things she learned that she never knew before and would last her whole lifetime.
We see an inch...God sees the whole road, everything that lies ahead, and has established our ways. He knows the end from the beginning. His eye is on the sparrow, He cares for the birds of the air. How much more He will care for His children.
"Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?" Matthew 6:26.
God's blessing, Js.
