BEAUTY FOR ASHES  (Crabbe, 1889)

I sing the love of God, my Father,
Whose Spirit abides within,
Who changes all my grief to gladness,
And pardons me all my sin.
Though clouds may lower, dark and dreary,
Yet He has promised to be near;
He gives me sunshine for my shadow,
And "beauty for ashes" here.

Refrain

He gives me joy in place of sorrow;
He gives me love that casts out fear;
He gives me sunshine for my shadow,
And "beauty for ashes" here.

I sing the love of God, my Savior,
Who suffered upon the tree,
That, in the secret of His presence,
My bondage might freedom be.
He comes "to bind the brokenhearted";
He comes the fainting soul to cheer;
He gives me "oil of joy" for mourning,
And "beauty for ashes" here.

Refrain

I sing the beauty of the Gospel
That scatters, not thorns, but flowers,
That bids me scatter smiles and sunbeams
Wherever are lonely hours.
The "garment of His praise" it offers
For "heaviness of spirit" drear;
It gives me sunshine for my shadow,
And "beauty for ashes" here.

Refrain

FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE (McAnlay, 1897)

O God of grace, increase our faith!
Help us to daily trust Thy Word;
Give us the strength that always comes
From leaning on our blessed Lord.

Refrain
O God of grace, in Jesus' name
Increase our faith, upbuild our hope,
Our  hearts  :HeartThrob: with zeal inflame,
Send down Thy Spirit from above,
Till faith and hope are lost in love.

O God of grace, upbuild our hope!
Let not a doubt our spirit sway;
Be Thou our constant shield of light
That we may walk the narrow way.

Refrain

O God of grace, inspire our love!
Fill our cold hearts with holy fire,
That we may live each passing day
As our Redeemer doth desire.

UPHELD BY HOPE  (Crawford, 1902)

"Upheld by hope" -- a glorious hope
As days and years roll by;
The coming of our Lord and King
Is surely drawing nigh.

"Upheld by hope"  --that wondrous hope,
That I shall see His face,
And to His likeness be conformed
When I have run the race.

"Upheld by hope" in darkest days
Faith can the light descry:
The deepening glory in the east
Proclaims deliverance nigh!

"Upheld by hope" how glad the heart! :HeartThrob:
My soul is on the wing!
E'en now His hand is on the door
He comes --my glorious King!

AWAKE, AWAKE! O HEART OF MINE!  (Fanny Crosby, 1887)

Awake, awake, O heart of mine!
Sing praise to God above;
Take up the song of endless years,
And sing redeeming love!
Redeemed by Him who bore our sins,
When on the cross He died;
Redeemed and purchased with His blood,
Redeemed and sanctified.

Refrain
Awake, awake, O heart of mine!
Sing praise, sing praise to God above;
Take up the song of endless years,
And sing redeeming love!

Redeemed by Him, my Lord and King,
Who saves me day by day;
My life and all its ransomed powers
Could never His love repay.
And yet His mercy condescends
My humble gift to own;
And through the riches of His grace,
He brings me near His throne.

Refrain

O love, unchanging, love sublime!
Not all the hosts above
Can reach the height or sound the depth
Of God's eternal love.
This wondrous love  :HeartThrob: enfolds the WHOLE world,
It fills the realms above;
'Tis boundless as eternity;
Oh, praise the God of love!

John 17:22
The glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are One.

THOU GOD OF ALL, WHOSE SPIRIT MOVES  Holmes, 1879-1964

Thou God of all, whose Spirit moves
From pole to silent pole,
Whose purpose binds the starry spheres
In one stupendous whole,
Whose life, like light, is freely poured
On ALL beneath the sun,
To Thee we lift our hearts  :HeartThrob: and pray
That Thou wilt make us ONE.

ONE in the patient company
Of those who heed Thy will,
And steadfastly pursue the way
Of Thy commandments still;
ONE in the holy fellowship
Of those who challenge wrong,
And lift the Spirit's sword to shield
The weak against the strong.

ONE in the truth that makes men free,
The faith that makes men brave;
ONE in the love that suffers long
To seek, and serve, and save;
ONE in the vision of Thy peace,
The kingdom yet to be,
When Thou shalt be the God of ALL,
And ALL be ONE in Thee.

MANY THOUGHTS STIR MY HEART  Orsborn, 1916

Many thoughts stir my heart as I ponder alone;
Many places attract me with charms all their own;
But the thought of all thoughts is of Christ crucified,
The place of all places, the hill where He died.

...

'Tis the end of my sin and the source of all grace;
'Tis the word of God's love to a prodigal race;
'Tis the greatest, the grandest gift God could impart,
Surpassing my reason, but winning my heart.

For the sake of the Christ and the love He showed on the cross
I have yielded my all and not reckoned it loss;
There's a place in my heart which the Savior must fill;
No other can take it, and none ever will.

Phil 3:8
I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord...

WHOM HAVE I IN HEAVEN?  Crosby, 1877  (Ps 73:25)

Whom have I in heaven above?  Only Thee, my Savior;
Whom have I on earth to love?  Only Thee my Savior;
Who my wounded heart can heal, who my every sorrow feel,
Who the light of joy reveal?  Only Thee, my Savior.

Who has led me all my days?  Only Thou, my Savior;
Who deserves my highest praise?  Only Thou, my Savior;
In my weakness who is strong, who has loved and loved me long,
Who should claim my noblest song?  Only Thou, my Savior.

Who my inmost thoughts can read?  Only Thou, my Savior;
Who for me doth intercede?  Only Thou, my Savior;
Who my secret thoughts can know, who such tender mercy show,
Who can make me white as snow?  Only Thou, my Savior.

REDEEMED, HOW I LOVE TO PROCLAIM IT!  Fanny Crosby, 1882

Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy,
His child and forever I am.

Refrain
Redeemed, redeemed,
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, redeemed,
His child and forever I am.

Redeemed, and so happy in Jesus,
No words my rapture can tell;
I know that the light of His presence
With me doth continually dwell.

I think of my blessed Redeemer,
I think of Him all the dy long:
I sing, for I cannot be silent;
His love is the theme of my song.

I know I shall see in His beauty
The King in whose law I delight;
Who lovingly guarded my footsteps,
And giveth me songs in the night.

I know there's a crown that is waiting,
In yonder bright mansion for me,
And soon, with the spirits made perfect,
At home with the Lord I shall be.

THE PEACE OF GOD  Jewett, 1911

The peace of God --O blessed peace,
That fills the heart and calms our fears,
That bids our soul's wild tumult cease,
And gives us sunlight thro' our tears.

Refrain
We'll rest in this wonderful peace,
So blest and so filled with God's love,
Till our souls find happy release,
And we reach the mansions above.

The peace of God -- O peace divine,
That bids our restless souls be still,
Till thro' the clouds the sun doth shine,
And we behold His perfect will.

The peace of God -- O restful peace,
Thro' all life's changing scenes below;
In this we'll rest till life shall cease,
And eternity's peace we know.

Author of peace, to Thee we raise
Our prayer for strength, to e'er endure
The ills we meet, till all our days
Find rest in Thee, Thy peace secure.

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.  Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

THY HAND UPHOLDETH ME  Fanny Crosby, 1899

I know Thy hand upholdeth me,
My Savior and my  God;
And step by step I'll follow Thee
Where'er Thy feet have trod.

Refrain
I know whom I have believed,
And, knowing, I am blest;
Thou art the anchor of my soul --
In Thee my hope shall rest.

I know Thy hand upholdeth me,
When doubt and danger near
Would tempt me from the narrow way,
Or fill my heart with fear.

I know Thy hand upholdeth me,
And will in safety keep
My trusting heart, though I may pass
Through waters dark and deep.

I know Thy hand upholdeth me,
And will my soul defend;
Sufficient is Thy grace, O Lord,
To keep me to the end.

BLESSED QUIETNESS  Ferguson, 1897

Joys are flowing like a river,
Since the Comforter has come;
He abides with us forever,
Makes the trusting heart His home.

Refrain
Blessed quietness, holy quietness,
What assurance in my soul!
On the stormy sea, He speaks peace to me,
How the billows cease to roll!

Bringing life and health and gladness,
All around this heav'nly Guest,
Banished unbelief and sadness,
Changed our weariness to rest.

Like the rain that falls from heaven,
Light the sunlight from the sky,
So the Holy Spirit is given,
Coming on us from on high.

See, a fruitful field is growing,
Blessed fruit of righteousness;
And the streams of life are flowing
In the lonely wilderness.

What a wonderful salvation,
Where we always see His face!
What a perfect habitation,
What a quiet resting place!

AND HIS GLORY I KNOW  Byrd, 1904

Jesus came to me, and He touched my eyes,
When I was blinded so;
And He gave to me my perfect sight,
And His glory I know.

Refrain
And His glory I know, and His glory I know;
Jesus touched my heart  :HeartThrob:, and He made me whole,
And His glory I know.

Jesus stays with me, and He keeps  my soul,
Wherever I chance to go;
For He cleansed my heart  :HeartThrob: and made me whole,
And His glory I know.

Jesus washed my life with His precious blood,
I'm whiter than the snow;
I am fully reconciled to God,
And His glory I know.

Jesus dwells in me, I will shout and sing,
My heart  :HeartThrob: is all aglow;
I am looking for my glorious king,
For His glory I know.

Jesus will come and will say, 'Well done!'
Away with Him I'll go;
And we'll fly beyond the setting sun
For His glory I know.

O THAT I COULD FOR EVER DWELL   Reed, 1842

O that I could for ever dwell
Delighted, at the Savior's feet,
Behold the form I love so well,
And all His tender words repeat.

The world shut out from all my soul,
And heaven brought in with all its bliss--
O is there aught from pole to pole,
One moment to compare to this!

This is the hidden life I prize--
A life of penitential love;  :HeartThrob:
When most my follies I despise,
And raise my highest thoughts above.

Thus would I live till nature fail,
And all my former sins forsake;
Then rise to God within the veil,
And of eternal joys partake.

Psalm 27:4
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek, inquire for, and require:  that I may dwell in the house of the Lord [in His presence] all the days of my life, to behold and gaze upon the beauty [the sweet attractiveness and the delightful loveliness] of the Lord and to meditate, consider, and inquire in His temple.

Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!

Death cannot keep its Prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!

I LOVE TO SING OF THAT GREAT POWER  Alman, 1847

I love to sing of that great Power
That made the earth and sea;
But better still, I love the song
Of "Jesus died for me."

I love to sing of shrub and flower,
Of field and plant and tree;
But sweeter note for ever is,
That "Jesus died for me."

I love to speak of God, of Heaven
And all its purity;
God is my Father, Heaven my home,
For "Jesus died for me."

And when I reach that happy place,
From all temptations free,
I'll tune my ever rapturous notes
With "Jesus died for me."

ONWARD GO    from Gospel Hymns, 1881

Trusting in the Lord thy God
Onward go!  onward go!
Holding fast His promised word,
Onward go!
Never deny His worthy name,
Tho' it bring reproach and shame;
Spreading still His wondrous fame,
Onward go!

Has He called thee to the plough?
Onward go!  onward go!
Night is coming, serve Him now;
Onward go!
Faith and love in service blend;
On His mighty arm depend;
Standing fast until the end.
Onward go!

...

In this little moment, then,
Onward go! onward go!
In thy ways acknowledge Him;
Onward go!
Let His mind be found in thee;
Let His will thy pleasure be;
Thus in life and liberty,
Onward go!

based on Ps 34:8 Taste and see that the Lord is good

HOW YOU WILL LOVE HIM!  Rexford, 1910

Ye who wander, of sin grown weary,
Lonely and far from the safe home-fold,
Come and learn what the love of Christ is,  :HeartThrob:
Love whose gladness can ne'er be told.

Refrain
O, how you will love Him when you know Him!
Know the Christ who died to set you free;
On Calvary's cross His heart was broken,
Broken there for you and for me!

Come, and coming, find peace and pardon
Waiting for you at the place of prayer;
Kneel and ask for a soul forgiven,
Christ is yearning to meet you there.

You should know of this love so tender,
Love that is steadfast, and deep, and true;
Come and share in its sweetness with me,
Come, and find that my Christ loves you.

Come, and find that you cannot fathom
Love like Christ's till you taste and see;
Height and depths of the love of Jesus
No man knows till it He sets him free.

BESIDE THE STILL WATERS  Dickenga, 1896

Beside the still waters, oh Father, my God,
There lead me, there feed me, there show me Thy Word;
There give me Thy counsel, there grant me Thy peace,
There make all my sorrows and wanderings cease.

Beside the still waters, enlighten my eye,
That I may walk worthily when Thou art nigh;
Cleanse me from presumption, my heart render pure,
Keep me from transgression and make my faith sure.

Beside the still waters, oh bountiful store,
I drink from their plenty and thirst nevermore;
No more I am weary when there I may rest,
And feel with Thy mercy and love I am blessed.

Beside the still waters, Thy goodness is there,
Protects me from danger, preserves me from care;
For pain has no terror and death has no sting,
While Thou art so near me, my Lord and my King.

The post "Ponderable Hymns"  has just been a small burr, but yet a burr. I like singing praises to the Lord and like hearing good ones, and all that have been posted are great. So I post this with no offence intended.
It's just the word hymn that aggitates me. It's technical and small, but I voice anyway.
It seems funny to me, and perhaps only me that the word "hymn" is only spoke of  twice in the Bible[Matt:26:30, Mk. 14:26] and not once in the OT. Yet when people get "religious" and are offered
hymn's, they get all welled up, or at least should, but they are but songs.

The word hymn means to sing a song.  I like to sing songs unto the Lord, but religion makes a "hymn" so much more righteous, and then to have a choir sing that hymn......well, holy, holy, holy. And the word "choir" is are not even in the Bible, imagine that! I love praise songs unto the Lord, I get uplifted...Glory!

For me theology and religion emphesizing hymn's and choirs as more  holy and sacred is propaganda to the masses, than songs, I get unrested.
Sing, and sing  songs is used through out the Bible, the song of Moses.
The use of the word hymn's, to me are but a gimmick of religion.
Religion sold us on choir's, great grouped voices, as being something high and  sacred,  but it's only religion, theology, and denominations with it's guise. The word choir, like trinity, rapture, are words vaccant from the Bible, yet look at religion today.

I am a troubadour, a guitar picker and song singer; ;  a psalm is= properly instrumental music; by implication a poem set to notes: - psalm= with the idea of striking with the fingers(like a harp or other
stringed instument.) that's what I love to do and Jabcat is very good at striking the piano and his praises are warming and fulfilling. So I like like songs of praise, it's the word "hymn's" that got me riled.
So I will add to the list of (Hymn's)  pondered. A song that gets me running to His Table to get fed!

Words by  Charles B. Widmeyer
Jesus has a table spread
Where the saints of God are fed,
He invites His chosen people, "Come and dine";
With His manna He doth feed
And supplies our every need:
Oh, 'tis sweet to sup with Jesus all the time!
Refrain:
"Come and dine," the Master calleth, "Come and dine";
You may feast at Jesus' table all the time;
He Who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine,
To the hungry calleth now, "Come and dine."
The disciples came to land,
Thus obeying Christ's command,
For the Master called unto them, "Come and dine";
There they found their heart's desire,
Bread and fish upon the fire;
Thus He satisfies the hungry every time.
Soon the Lamb will take His bride
To be ever at His side,
All the host of heaven will assembled be;
Oh, 'twill be a glorious sight,
All the saints in spotless white;
And with Jesus they will feast eternally.
Mic 7:8  Thou dost not rejoice over me, O mine enemy, When I have fallen, I have risen, When I sit in darkness Jehovah is a light to me.
