What do these scriptures mean?
fullarmor2:
Jesus speaking. "If your eye offends you, pluck it out, for it is better to go through life with one eye than to be cast into hell where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched".
Jesus said something similar to this again only that time he talked about cutting off your hand if it offends, and then he said the same thing about hell. What do these verses mean or what do they teach us?
Thank you in advance for help on this.
studier:
It is not literal, it is metaphorical. He was talking to the Body of Israel, the assembly of people who have been held back from the God because of certain men. These men were religious bigots, who created laws upon laws to justify their sins, instead of submitting to God. So Jesus was talking about the Pharisee and Saducee would lead Israel into the Lake of Fire, and Israel had a choice cut them off or they will be cut off. You find more understanding concerning this in Matthew 23 and the judgment of Gehenna.

I think Jesus is teaching us that if we serve idols intead of God, God will judge us and it won't be fun. So, at all cost, don't serve them.

good concept Craig , seeing that
but also seeing it more personally as Paul claims for us having members [ within and without ,as well as others]member , hand foot eye etc....... with Pauls mind he delighted to serve the Living God having now the mind of Christ [ or Christ being the Head] and he would follow the Spirits leading and Will [desires] but he speaks of in his members [body of death ] that went to warring with his New Mind , this is what to me Jesus refers to as saying do you think i come to bring peace ? nay BUT divisions ![ its starts within us first to me ] in luke 12 verse 48-53
our members must be brought down to all obedience to Christ or CUT OFF ,,
thats what im seeing as well as your concept bro ..
for all inward jews as we are as the first that shall be LAST as scribes , readers of the LAW . pharrisses , Seperate our selves from the world as holy but smoke in Gods NOSTRILS and hypocrits , SAY BUT DO NOT DO! as Jesus told one to do as they say , but not as they do ... say they love God and yet hate their brother a good example for me anyways ..
1Cr 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring [it] into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
a Castaway..........Gr. adokimos, ( 1Cr 9:27), one regarded as unworthy ( R.V., "rejected"); elsewhere rendered "reprobate" ( 2Ti 3:8, etc.); "rejected" ( Hbr 6:8, etc.).
like the bad fish parable or tree branch etc ..
hope this may help in some way a little fullarmor2
